Baylor Basketball Reportedly Facing Sanctions in Wake of NCAA Investigation

Gabe ZaldivarJun 7, 2018

You can call off the goodwill garnered from a fabulous year for the Baylor basketball program, because the NCAA is about ready to conclude its investigation on the program, and sanctions may be forthcoming.

Update: Wednesday, April 11, 3:35 p.m. ET

Baylor won't have to worry about the NCAA piling on any additional penalties beyond those self-imposed by the university, according to Gary Parrish of CBS:

Baylor just announced that the NCAA has accepted its self-imposed penalties. So that, as they say, is that.

Those penalties are listed below.

Update: Monday, April 9, 5:45 p.m. ET

We may now have an idea of what's in store for the Baylor program. According to Pete Thamel of the New York Times, not much more:

"

The NCAA expects to release the formal Baylor punishment sometime this week. Don't expect any significant additional penalties.

ESPN's Jason King reports the NCAA is ending its investigation into a myriad of Baylor sports programs, including the men's and women's basketball teams, and has found more than 1,200 impermissible phone calls and text messages.

The report issues Baylor self-imposed penalties after receiving the initial report from the NCAA review committee back in October.

The time has come for the committee to make its judgement on whether there should be additional punishments levied.

While there were other sports involved, the report features men's coach Scott Drew, women's coach Kim Mulkey and their assistants who were involved in the impermissible phone calls and texts:

"

The report concluded that Drew demonstrated a "failure to monitor" the activities of two of his assistant coaches and that there was also an overall "failure to monitor" by the institution....

According to the report, all of the coaches -- including Drew and Mulkey -- have acknowledged their involvement in the respective findings and are at risk for a show-cause penalty, which means any penalties will remain with them regardless of where they coach. Schools wishing to hire them would have to "show cause" as to why they shouldn't inherit the penalties.

"

If you are wondering how severe things may get for the two basketball programs that have become among the best in the nation, ESPN has a list of punishments, and here are a few:

"

• Mulkey -- whose 2011-12 squad went undefeated and won the NCAA title -- will be prohibited from recruiting off-campus for the entire summer recruiting period (July 1-31, 2012).

• [Women's assistant Damion] McKinney hasn't been allowed to make recruiting calls to prospective student-athletes since Jan. 1. The ban will be lifted on May 1.

• Baylor's women's basketball program lost two of its 15 scholarships in 2011-12.

• Baylor's men's program lost one scholarship for both the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons.

• Drew and [men's assistant Jerome] Tang were prohibited from making recruiting calls from Jan. 1 - Feb. 29 of this year.

• The maximum number of official visits allowed to the men's basketball team in 2012-13 was reduced from 12 to seven.

"

The Baylor women just completed a remarkable season in which they won 40 games and took home the national championship and did so with the best player in the nation on their team in Brittney Griner.

The Baylor men are enjoying nearly as successful a surge. They just completed a dynamic run into the Elite Eight, their second time accomplishing the feat since 2010.

Now comes the next step, which will be an arduous one for a program that has become among the most productive in recent years.

ESPN's report reminds us that the wins from both basketball programs combined with the football team equals an NCAA-record 80 victories.

Baylor will hope it can recruit heavily on prestige and promise of success, because it is about to take a hit in the form of scholarships and communication that is vital to recruit future stars.

This is a crucial time to build relationships with potential Baylor standouts, and that is being negated at the moment.
