WWE: Bringing Back Brock Lesnar Proves Creative Is Burying Its Current Talents

David LevinJun 4, 2018

What in the name of “Stunning Steve Austin” is the WWE doing?

I realize WrestleMania 28 was a smash and the idea of bringing back superstars of yesterday (The Rock, Chris Jericho and HBK) made this year the best year of any of the WrestleManias. But I have a feeling the idea of bringing back Brock Lesnar is going to backfire on the momentum that was created within the last week.

Tonight is the true “first” Raw program sans WrestleMania. We should be over the headache or hangover created by its euphoria. The exit of The Rock and the entrance of Brock Lesnar creates a “buzz” heading into Extreme Rules and the hot summer months.

Trust me, this could backfire.

The Rock was involved in a year-long program that brought millions (and millions) of The Rock's fans into the fold and created some of the best heat (whether it was truly good or not) to the WWE in while. Not since the summer months and CM Punk’s antics had we seen where WWE wrestling mattered.

Brock Lesnar is not The Rock, and he is not able to create that kind of fan support.

While other promotions have tried crazy antics and angles over the years (David Arquette wrestling, Dennis Rodman getting in the ring with Karl Malone and someone named Mr. T trying to box and take down Roddy Piper), Lesnar brings back his wrestling prowess to the WWE.

But time and the man have changed.

Can he recapture the gold or the vise grip he had before?

The body is not as sculpted. The competitors are more athletic. There is no “true” go-to wrestler for a main-event gem. There is no Goldberg or Batista or Triple H, for that matter, who are everyday wrestlers. And while John Cena needs a program to keep him vital and in the minds of all of us, it will be up to Lesnar to deliver nightly and at the “Extreme Rules” PPV.

Back when Lesnar lost in UFC, ending his MMA career, a lot was made of Chris Jericho and the comments he made regarding Lesnar’s stay in MMA. Why hasn’t that been used as a springboard?

It would strengthen the battle lines. It would create another feud and maybe allow Cena to finally “Embrace the Hate” and get back into a program with Punk or allow other stars like Dolph Ziggler, Cody Rhodes, Daniel Bryan and Wade Barrett to claim their due respect.

Also, injury and illness play a huge part in his return.

This could be a major boon for the WWE if Lesnar can shell out, but we all have learned he is moody, injury prone, unimaginative and robot-like at times. Plus, time wears on athletes. And time also matures some.

My bet is others have gotten better while Lesnar has gotten worse.

So before we all jump around proclaiming the former “Next Big Thing” to be the current and future “Next Big Thing,” realize there needs to be a landing point at some point, which either makes Lesnar a star again or allows him to leave gracefully.

Right now, he is one big question mark.
