Florida Football: Post-Spring Game 2-Deep Depth Chart
The Florida Gators had a lot of questions to answer heading into the spring, and hopefully, for their sake, walked away with a lot of answers. Florida has wrapped up all of their spring practices, and the spring game came to an end with the Blue defeating the Orange by a score of 21-20.
There were a few players who stepped up and may move up the depth chart, and then there are your positions that still remain undecided. Although for the most part, the Gators have to feel a little better about their team heading into the fall.
Here is what the post-spring depth chart should look like for the Florida Gators.
QB: Jacoby Brissett/Jeff Driskel
1 of 24Jeff Driskel
Jaoby Brissett
This is one of those battles that has yet to be decided due to solid play by both players. Brissett went 9-for-16 for 233 yards and two touchdowns, while Driskel completed 12-of-14 passes for 147 yards and rushed for a touchdown.
Don't expect a decision to be made anytime soon.
"I think you saw both those guys take command of our football team," head coach Will Muschamp said. "Both guys made vertical plays down the field, good decisions where they took the ball. You saw what I've been seeing from 14 practices previous to today. We can win with both guys."
RB: Mike Gillislee
2 of 24Mike Gillislee
Mack Brown
You could say this battle has yet to be decided as well, but if the season was to start tomorrow, Gillislee would be the No.1 back. He has experience, showed no signs of that ankle giving him any problems and overall, is the most complete back on the Gators roster. He catches the ball well, picks up the block and of course is a big-play runner.
WR: Andre Debose
3 of 24Andre Debose
Stephen Alli
Debose will remain a starter at wide receiver due to his big-play ability and leading the Gators in receiving yards (432) and receiving touchdowns (four). Debose caught a beautiful 44-yard pass during the spring game from Driskel, which was the second-longest play of the spring game.
WR: Quinton Dunbar
4 of 24Quinton Dunbar
Solomon Patton
Dunbar has had a fantastic camp and should be ready for an even bigger season than the 14 receptions he had last year. It's a good thing he's improved throughout the spring because the Gators coaching staff is really counting on him this year.
“There aren't many redshirt freshmen that you rely on to be your go-to guy as far as the receiver position's concerned,” Muschamp said. “It didn't have anything to do with physical ability. It had to do with the mental aptitude of consistency in his performance every day, week in and week out in our league.”
WR: Frankie Hammond, Jr.
5 of 24Frankie Hammond, Jr.
Latroy Pittman
This position is still up for grabs, but as of right now, I'll give it to Hammond Jr. Sure, he's had a few drops throughout practice, but he's an experienced receiver who has the skill set to really have a breakout season with some consistency at the quarterback position. He's 6'1" with great speed and playmaking ability.
TE: Jordan Reed
6 of 24Jordan Reed
Omarius Hines
The tight end position hasn't exactly stood out in the spring, so one would think Reed would remain the favorite heading into the fall. After all, he was one of the more consistent receivers last season, as he hauled in 28 passes for over 300 yards.
LT: Xavier Nixon
7 of 24Xavier Nixon
D.J. Humphries
Freshman D.J. Humphries is pushing Nixon for the starting position, so this position may not be settled quite yet. But Nixon is the senior and was named to the Outland Trophy watch list before the season started. As of right now, I'll give Nixon the nod, but don't be surprised if a true freshman is starting on the offensive line as some point.
LG: James Wilson
8 of 24James Wilson
Sam Robey
Wilson is one of the more talented offensive linemen; the problem is that he can never stay healthy. He was given a sixth year of eligibility because of his health issues and may seem to have finally figured things out.
“It’s good to see him back out there,” offensive lineman Chaz Green said. “He’s capitalized on it. It’s his last year, make the best of it.”
If he can continue the improvement, he'll likely start at left guard this season.
C: Jonotthan Harrison
9 of 24Jonotthan Harrison
Kyle Koehne
Harrison is a versatile player and one of the more experienced on the offensive line as he heads into his junior season. He played the center position for most of last season, and when he wasn't there, he was playing left guard. Expect to see the 300-pounder snapping the ball this season for the Gators.
RG: Jon Halapio
10 of 24Jon Halapio
D.J. Humphries
In Florida's first scrimmage, Muschamp named Halapio one of the best offensive performers. He was one of the few bright spots in this offensive line last season, as he started every game at right guard last season. Expect nothing to change here, as his spot should remain safe.
RT: Chaz Green
11 of 24Chaz Green
Matt Patchan
Chaz Green is going to be a starter, especially if he played as well as he did last season when he was named a freshman All-American. He's only entering his sophomore season, but is an absolute beat at 6'5" 305 pounds. He really has the potential to become one of the better offensive linemen in this conference.
DE: Sharrif Floyd
12 of 24Sharrif Floyd
Earl Okine
Floyd was a defensive tackle last season and finished the year with over 40 tackles and 1.5 sacks. Now due to his speed and relentless motor, he will move to the defensive end position and is really looking forward to the switch.
“I'm actually having my best spring since I've been at Florida,” said Floyd. “I'm getting better each day at (defensive end). Now, I understand it. It's no problem for me anymore.”
DT: Leon Orr
13 of 24Leon Orr
Damien Jacobs
Orr was a force in the spring game, as he picked up a tackle for a loss and seemed to always be in on the action. As a freshman last year, he finished with 10 tackles and one sack in very limited playing time. He likely won't be the starter once Dominique Easley returns from a torn ACL, but the young man has shown promise early on.
NT: Omar Hunter
14 of 24Omar Hunter
Nick Alajajian
After finally overcoming injuries, Hunter seems to be ready to go and will continue to be a big part of this defense. Hunter finished last season with 31 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and one sack. He's entering his senior season, and the athletic big man should have an even bigger impact on this line this season.
DE/Buck: Ronald Powell
15 of 24Ronald Powell
Gideon Ajagbe
Ronald Powell will remain in his spot considering he was one of the best pass-rushers on the team a year ago, racking up six sacks and 32 tackles. He did leave the spring game with an injury, but head coach Will Muschamp says it doesn't appear to be serious.
"I think it's a sprain at this point," Muschamp said.
If the injury isn't a big deal, Powell will continued to be counted on as being one of the main pass-rushers for this defense.
LB: Darrin Kitchens
16 of 24Darrin Kitchens
Graham Stewart
Kitchens is that speedy linebacker who has the ability to become a difference-maker for this defense. He finished with 21 tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss a season ago, but has the ability to make game-changing plays. He'll remain No.1 for strongside linebacker, at least until Lerentee McCray comes back from a shoulder injury.
LB: Jon Bostic
17 of 24Jon Bostic
Michael Taylor
There's no question who will be the starting middle linebacker for this team. Jonathan Bostic led the gators in tackles last season with 94, had 10 tackles for loss and even picked up three sacks. Entering his senior season, he's also a leader on this team that hopes to make everyone on the field better.
LB: Jelani Jenkins
18 of 24Jelani Jenkins
Antonio Morrison
Jenkins is another linebacker who doesn't have to worry about his starting job, as he finished last season with 75 tackles, six tackles for loss and two sacks. He also intercepted a pass and ran it back 75 yards for a score. The scary thing is that he may just be getting started with the big plays.
"We're always trying to get better. I think we do need to make more plays, and I think that'll help out the team and keep getting the ball in our offense's hands." Jenkins said.
CB: Louchiez Purifoy
19 of 24Louchiez Purifoy
Willie Bailey
Purifoy picked up 27 tackles and forced a fumble his freshman season. He's also received a lot of reps in practice with both Marcus Roberson and Jeremy Brown out for the spring. Will the former 4-star recruit remain No.1 on the depth chart when they are healthy?
That question will be answered when the fall rolls around.
CB: Cody Riggs
20 of 24Cody Riggs
Jaylen Watkins
Cody Riggs is another member of this secondary that was banged up and had to leave during the spring game. But until we know how serious the injury is, he'll likely remain the starting cornerback on the opposite side of Purifoy. He's a great cover corner, with solid speed and finished his sophomore season with 31 tackles and two passes broken up.
Nickel: Matt Elam
21 of 24Matt Elam
Valdez Showers
Matt Elam has missed some of the spring and the spring game due to groin surgery, but should be back in time for the regular season to start. He's a huge part of this secondary considering he finished second on the team last year with 78 tackles, 11 tackles for loss and two sacks.
If Elam is not ready to go by September, you may see Riggs switch to the nickel position or redshirt freshman Showers earn some playing time.
S: Josh Evans
22 of 24Josh Evans
Valdez Showers
Josh Evans is a playmaker who can help the Gators in so many different ways. His speed is very helpful, and last season alone, he was fifth on the team in tackles with 51, intercepted a pass, recovered a fumble, sacked the quarterback and was used on offense a little bit. Evans has the potential to become a difference-maker for this team and should have an even bigger role this season. He led the Orange team with three tackles during the spring game.
K: Caleb Sturgis
23 of 24Caleb Sturgis
Brad Phillips
Caleb Sturgis was a solid kicker last season for the Gators, nailing 84 percent of his kicks and a perfect 100 percent on extra points. He did end up missing a 34-yard field goal in the scrimmage, but overall, he's the most experienced kicker on the roster and is reliable enough to keep as the starter this season.
P: Kyle Christy
24 of 24Kyle Christy
Todd Fennell
Christly has the leg to become one of the top punters in the country, and he's only a sophomore. You can read some of Will Muschamps' complements on the sophomore punter here. He punted the ball 30 times as a freshman and averaged 40 yards a punt, including a 67-yard boot in the game against Auburn.
