Bubba Watson: Career Expectations for Masters Champ
Bubba Watson finally got the monkey off his back and won a major championship at the age of 33, but don't expect him to go on a tear dominating the PGA the rest of his career.
That isn't a reasonable expectation.
Watson reminds me a lot of Phil Mickelson. The biggest difference between the two is that Mickelson is a workout warrior and Watson isn't.
I expect Watson's career trajectory to run along a similar line to that of Mickelson's.
He will win a few more majors by the time he's finished, but Watson won't ever dominate a season like Tiger Woods used to do.
There is too much competition on tour nowadays for that to happen.
A reasonable expectation for Watson would be for him to win one to three tournaments per year on average for the rest of his career, much like Mickelson.
I know he's only won six tournaments in his career thus far, but I'm betting on the fact that Watson will start to win more now that he's finally won a major championship.
That, plus there is power in his pink driver...literally.
Watson has always had the game to be a major force on tour. He drives the ball a mile-and-a-half—though a bit sporadically at times—and often has a lofted club in his hands on his second shots when many others are grabbing four irons.
Additionally, Watson is a genius ball-striker. The shot he hit on the 74th hole from the trees was one of the best shots you will ever see on any course at any time, let alone in a pressure-packed moment like that.
Finally, Watson has the touch on and around the greens to win.
Watson won't ever be a dominating force on tour, but he's going to be fun to watch for a long, long time.
Career prediction: Watson will finish his career with 25-plus wins, including four major championships.
