NFL Draft 2012: Most Overrated QBs in Draft Class

Nicholas GossJun 7, 2018

The NFL is a passing-driven league, but that doesn't mean teams should reach on overrated quarterbacks in the first few rounds of the draft.

There are several talented quarterbacks in this year's draft class, but many of them are being overhyped right now. Outside of Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III, there aren't any quarterbacks in this class that will have special careers.

Let's look at three quarterbacks who are overrated in this year's draft class.

Ryan Tannehill, Texas A&M

Ryan Tannehill is a very athletic player who has good mobility because he used to be a wide receiver, but his throwing accuracy isn't at an NFL level.

Too often in college, he put his team in a bad spot by throwing an interception, but at the NFL level against much better competition, his poor accuracy will result in constant mistakes.

Teams like the Miami Dolphins cannot take Tannehill in the first round because he's not going to be a good NFL quarterback, especially not right away.

Any team that takes him in the first two rounds is making a giant mistake.

Brandon Weeden, Oklahoma State

Brandon Weeden is 28 years old, which means he's not going to have a very long career in the NFL. He also doesn't have the upside or athletic talent that many of the quarterbacks in this year's draft class have.

Weeden also didn't play against many talented defenses in the Big 12 conference last season and had four multi-interception games, including two three-interception games.

Weeden is a solid pocket passer, but he won't be much more than a quality backup throughout his NFL career.

Stephen Garcia, South Carolina

Stephen Garcia was a pretty good quarterback for the South Carolina Gamecocks, but he was kicked off the team last season because he violated team rules.

His maturity and whether or not he's grown up yet is a real concern for NFL general managers thinking of taking a shot on him at April's draft.

Garcia showed a lot of skills in college and even defeated No. 1-ranked Alabama during the 2010 season in a great performance.

Garcia could be a middle round selection, but he will have to prove to teams that his character issues aren't a concern going forward.
