Georgia Football: Latest Spring Practice News, Notes and Updates
Athens will be (somewhat) rocking on Saturday because the annual G-Day spring game will take place at Sanford Stadium. This is time where fans will have a chance to get a glimpse of the 2012 team and what they have been working on the last month.
This is also a time where fans get to see some of the new players that have joined the team such as Faton Bauta and Mark Beard.
However, one new play that the fans are dying to see but will probably not play in the game is running back Keith Marshall because he is nursing a hamstring injury he suffered last week. Veterans Shawn Williams and Richard Samuel are likely to sit out as well. Williams went down with a knee injury this past Saturday when the Bulldogs had their second scrimmage this spring. Samuel, who plays running back and some fullback, will sit out due to a concussion.
As mentioned earlier, the Bulldogs had their second scrimmage of the spring season. One of the good things that came out of the scrimmage is the way the offense played, especially in the passing game. Aaron Murray finished 8-of-13 with 125 yards and one touchdown. Hutson Mason was just as efficient, completing 12 of his 19 attempts for 151 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.
Marlon Brown had five catches for 90 yards and one touchdown, while Justin Scott-Wesley also had five receptions and a score.
On the defensive side of the ball, Corey Moore had as huge day. The sophomore from Griffin, Ga. had nine tackles and one interception. Ray Drew also had a big day, tallying five tackles and one sack, and Ramik Wilson also had a good day, with seven tackles, one sack and one pass breakup.
One of the bad things to come out of camp was that the running game continues to struggle. Ken Malcolm had 29 yards on five carries, while Isaiah Crowell added 23 yards on six carries. Brandon Harton rushed for 11 yards on six carries.
Offensive lineman Kolton Houston did not play last year because he was ineligible. But he is back with the team and is getting praised by his players and coaches. Offensive line coach Will Friend said that Houston will be a good player for them if he continues to get stronger and faster.
Two other players that have drawn praise this past week were defensive lineman Garrison Smith and defensive back Damian Swann. Defensive coordinator Todd Grantham said Smith brings a lot of energy to the defense and knows what everybody does. He also said that Swann is a good player that continues to improve every day.
And speaking of improving, Grantham also said Sterling Bailey has grown a lot since he stepped onto campus. Bailey, who was recruited to play to play outside linebacker, will play some defensive end this fall. He will join Cornelius Washington and Drew as former linebackers that have made the move to down lineman.
