Masters 2012 Leaderboard: Big Names Set to Make Final Day Push

Timothy RappApr 8, 2012

Sunday at the Masters is one of the finest afternoons in sports—even if you aren't a golf fan. And this year's final day should prove to come down to the wire, with eight golfers within five strokes of the leader, Peter Hanson (nine-under).

While Tiger Woods (three-over) and Rory McIlroy (one-over) have likely shot themselves out of contention, a handful of big names are still in contention atop the leaderboard. Let's take a look at a few primed for a big final day and a shot at the elusive green jacket.

Phil Mickelson (eight-under)

The green jacket hasn't been terribly elusive for Lefty, who already has three of his own. And he has steadily improved each round, shooting a 68 in Round 2 and a fantastic 66 in Round 3 after starting the tournament with a 74.

Though sitting one stroke behind Hanson, Sunday could be Mickelson's day. With the crowd behind him, the momentum of two excellent rounds and a history of success at Augusta, Lefty has to be the current favorite to win the tournament at this point.

Bubba Watson (six-under)

Watson has arguably been the tournament's most consistent player, at least in terms of staying under par in each round.

His consistency each round (69, 71, 70) has put him in a great position to take home a green jacket. The talent is certainly there to do it. But will he be able to handle the final-day pressure?

I guess we'll see.

Lee Westwood (four-under)

If any golfer sitting five strokes behind the leader is capable of staging a comeback at Augusta on Sunday, Westwood seems the most likely candidate.

While his last two rounds (73, 72) have been solid, Westwood has already proven he is capable of having a big day after shooting a 67 in Round 1.

Westwood finished second at Augusta in 2010 and has six top-three finishes in his career—don't be surprised when he is in serious contention coming down the back nine on Sunday.
