Chicago Blackhawks: Who's It Gonna Be? 'Hawks Playoff Opponent Up for Grabs

Jon FromiJun 4, 2018

The Chicago Blackhawks had to wait until the last night of the regular season last spring to know if they were playoff bound or not. This time around, the spot is assured, but it may be early Sunday morning before we know who the 'Hawks draw in the first round.

Going into this afternoon's tilt in Detroit, Chicago could be securing a date with the Nashville Predators. Beating the Red Wings in regulation makes it pretty cut and dried. The Blackhawks would come back to Chicago and pack their bags for Music City.

If Chicago needs overtime to beat Detroit, or if the Red Winds come out on top, there may be a bit of a waiting game to play. Supposing the Blackhawks remain the sixth seed, a trio of potential opponents are still on the table.

The Pacific Division is going to come down to the last day, which means that Phoenix, Los Angeles or San Jose could all be the Hawks' destination next week when the Stanley Cup Playoffs get underway.

The Coyotes currently are on top of the scramble, but circumstances could change quickly.

Phoenix is in Minnesota tonight. If they beat the Wild, they win the division and the third seed, period. If they simply get to overtime, they claim the division title, as they hold the edge in tiebreakers over both the Kings and Sharks.

If Phoenix loses in regulation, prepare to wait. The Pacific Division will be decided by the final regular season game between Los Angeles and San Jose. Both teams sit at 94 points. The winner of the game will earn the third seed.

The Hawks control their destiny at this moment. Win in regulation, and things become very clear from their standpoint. Nashville offers shorter trips but the promise of a tough series. Of course, the Hawks are even at best against the other three options, so perhaps ending the regular season with a win would be best for momentum's sake.

Chicago will be without Jonathan Toews yet again, as well as Dave Bolland and Andrew Brunette. Sami Lepisto is going to start for the first time since a leg injury put him on the shelf. Marian Hossa sat out practice Friday but is expected to play.

Right now, if the Hawks want the Predators, they can get them. We'll be able to preview of whomever Chicago draws following Saturday's action.
