Newcastle's Papiss Demba Cisse Scores Goal of the Year [VIDEO]

Christopher HallApr 7, 2012

On Friday, Swansea City had 77 percent of the possession, took 19 shots and completed more than 900 passes. What Swansea didn't have was a No. 9 named Papiss Demba Cisse.

Cisse scored in the fifth minute by drifting into space next to the center-back and taking his chance firmly toward the bottom corner, but it was his second goal that has tongues wagging across the footballing world.

The Senegalese forward made an angled run off the back of Swansea center-back Ashley Williams to open up a passing lane. The ball from Yohan Cabaye found the forward as he moved to his left, away from goal.

Cisse controlled the pass with the outside of his right foot and, without changing pace or direction, hit a sublime right-footed chip over the sliding Williams that gave Swansea keeper Michel Vorm absolutely no chance.

It will undoubtedly go down as one of the best goals of the Premier League season, but Newcastle defender James Perch said it wasn't even the best finish he's seen from Cisse this week:

"

He did a finish on Thursday in training which is one of the best finishes I've ever seen.

It just went unnoticed really, which tells you just how good he has been for us in training and matches.

And then he went and did that today. You don't know where he's going to stop at. Every time the ball is at his feet in the box you think he's going to score.

"

Since joining Newcastle from German side Freiburg in January, Cisse has scored nine goals in just eight games.

That seems a fair return on the just over $14 million (US) that Newcastle manager Alan Pardew shelled out for the 26-year-old striker. At the time, Cisse called playing for Newcastle an honor:

"

It is an honour to play for such a big club and I am looking forward to it. I want to pay back the confidence the Club have shown in me, and give the supporters something to be proud of.

I am aware of the huge importance of the number nine shirt, and when I spoke with the manager he made it very clear how important this shirt is. I will treat it with the respect and I hope to do my very best in this shirt.

"

Cisse now finds himself having scored a brace in the Toon's last three games. His form has seen Newcastle win four in a row and (with a game in hand) move three points clear of Chelsea into fifth place in the Premier League table.

Pardew was not enamored of his team's performance on Friday, but he enthused over his new striker:

"

We weren't brilliant, we were a bit flat, but Cisse was electric.

His second goal, it was like a Masters golf shot. I thought it had gone over in mid-air, but it had that bit of backspin on it. It was a terrific finish.

"

With his team sitting just two points behind Arsenal and Tottenham, Pardew admitted the Champions League places are now his goal with six games remaining in the season:

"

I always said the last 10 games are the most important, and if we were to get to the last six we would give it a go.

We have now won four out of four to put us in a position that elevates us to better form than we expected, but there is a belief in the group.

"

If Newcastle are able to overtake either of the London clubs to finish in the top four, they will do so on the shooting boots of Cisse.

Cisse and the Toon will take the field next when Bolton visit St James' Park on Monday.
