Latest Updates on Ed Reed, Matt Forte and Potential Training-Camp Holdouts

Tim KeeneyJun 7, 2018

While they usually just involve one player, training-camp holdouts can really derail an NFL team's season.

Whether the players sign in time for the start of the season or not, the damage has already been done. Sometimes this isn't the case. Sometimes players hold out and then sign right before the regular season and all is well and good.

But ask the San Diego Chargers how Vincent Jackson's holdout went. Or ask Tennessee how Chris Johnson's affected his play. When a player holds out, it can absolutely kill the relationship between him and the player.

With that bright and cheerful news, here's a look at top players aiming to wreck their team by sitting on the sideline until they get more money.

Ed Reed, S, Baltimore Ravens

Overall, Reed has been arguably the best safety in the league during his amazing 10-year career. Now, he wants to be paid like it.

Or maybe even more. Said Reed in during a Baltimore radio appearance

"

"I was not trying to break the bank. Do I deserve a good substantial amount? I mean you look at Peyton [Manning, Broncos quarterback]. Peyton got five [years] for $96 [million]? I know I'm not a quarterback, but at the end of the day … "They pay certain positions certain ways. I'm different, man."

"

He later went on to say that he isn't getting the respect he deserves:

"

“I got some unfinished business. I got a lot on my mind I’ve been thinking about. The truth of the matter is, it’s about respect. It’s about getting respect, and it’s a business.”

"

Matt Forte, RB, Chicago Bears

With Forte, it's the classic argument about how to treat an injury. Last season, before spraining his MCL and being forced to miss the rest of the season, Forte was Chicago's whole offense.

At times, he accumulated upwards of 60 percent of the Bears' total yards en route to a ridiculous 1,487 yards in 12 incomplete games. If he would have stayed healthy, there's no question Forte was on his way to Chris Johnson-type money.

But now that he has health concerns, what are the Bears to do?

According to Sean Jensen of the Sun Times, the Bears made Forte "a strong offer" about a week-and-a-half ago.

Still no deal.

Oh, yeah, and the Bears signed running back Michael Bush to a four-year contract last month, which couldn't have made Forte too happy.

As Scooby-Doo would say, ruh roh.

Victor Cruz, WR, New York Giants

Cruz set a franchise record with 1,536 receiving yards in 2011. And in 2012, he's set to make a base salary of $540,000.

Something doesn't add up.

Nonetheless, Cruz, who many believe is a strong holdout candidate, has reiterated that he will come to play no matter what.

"

"That’s not in my vocabulary," the Giants’ wide receiver said when asked about a holdout by NBC 4’s Bruce Beck at Steiner Studios in Brooklyn. “I don’t even know what that means.”

"

Let the salsa dancing commence.
