Masters Standings 2012: Top 10 Listing and Other Notables from Day 1

Jesse ReedJun 7, 2018

Day one of the Masters is in the books, and there are some notable absences atop the leaderboard.

A quick glance at history suggests that the standings after the opening round don't always reflect the way things look at the end, though.

Augusta National Golf Club is as gorgeous as ever, and the course presented some major challenges today with wet fairways and tough pins.

The scoring was easier than than usual, though, due to soft, rain-soaked greens, and there were 29 golfers to finish under par—an unusually high number compared to most years.

Here is your top 10 after Thursday's action:

Golfer     To Par           Score
1.   Lee Westwood -567
T2. Louis Oosthuizen -4 68
T2. Peter Hansen-4 68
T4. Ben Crane -369
T4. Jason Dufner -369
T4. Bubba Watson-369
T4. Paul Lawrie -369
T4. Miguel Jimenez-369
T4. Francesco Molinari  -3

69

The first thing you notice about the leaderboard is that Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Rory McIlroy and a host of other big names are missing.

Here is how the rest of the notable contestants fared:

Golfer                           To Par            Score
T10. Zach Johnson-270
T10. Vijah Singh-270
T10. Fred Couples-270
T15. Angel Cabrera-171
T15. Jim Furyk-171
T15. Aaron Baddeley-171
T15. Rory McIlroy -171
T30. Sergio GarciaE72
T30. Charl Schwartzel E72
T30. Tiger WoodsE72
T55. Phil Mickelson+274

The tides of change move swiftly at Augusta this time of year, and the golfers at the top of the leaderboard today could find themselves struggling to make the cut tomorrow.

Woods, McIlroy and Mickelson will likely be in it for the long haul, though no man knows for sure what the future holds.

Out of the big three, Mickelson has the toughest road in front of him. It will be interesting to watch him tomorrow to see if he crumbles under the pressure or rises above.
