Masters 2012 Leaderboard: Breaking Down Stars After Day 1
Never take Augusta for granted. Just ask Henrik Stenson.
The 36-year-old Swedish golfer had full control of the lead, and in an instant, it was gone. In one epic disaster, Stenson went from Day 1 masterpiece to cautionary tale.
He laid an eight on the final, a big fat snowman on a cloudy day at the Masters, and with that we give you the leaderboard.
| Pos. | Player | Score | Thru |
| 1 | Lee Westwood | -5 | F |
| 2 | Louis Oosthuizen | -4 | F |
| T3 | Jason Dufner | -3 | F |
| T3 | Ben Crane | -3 | F |
| T3 | Peter Hanson | -3 | 14 |
| T3 | Paul Lawrie | -3 | F |
| T3 | Miguel Jimenez | -3 | F |
| T3 | Francesco Molinari | -3 | F |
Here are some thoughts on the most interesting early leaders.
First, there are some golfers just off the lead. Bubba Watson is having a solid day and is at two-under through 15, and of course, there is Tiger Woods.
He was nipping at the leaderboard before he bogied the last two holes, going even on the day. They will both be noted on Day 2.
Make note that some of the leaders will sink far sooner than they will tread water at Augusta. One bad putt can turn into a myriad. An off drive can turn a troubling start into a tournament disaster.
1. Lee Westwood
Westwood managed to skirt the same demise of Stenson as he finished string and is, as of this writing, the leader at Augusta.
As Stenson was going down in flames, Westwood was flourishing, birdieing five and then doing the same at the next three holes.
2. Louis Oosthuizen
Don't look now, but the South African is looking like a guarantee to save himself from the axe. He has failed to make the cut in three tries at Augusta.
There is no denying how hot he can get in a tournament; perhaps what he needed was one solid Day 1 to get the nerves out.
Four times may be a charm, but history is not on his side. I will be convinced of his status of contender after Day 2 brilliance.
3. Miguel Jimenez
We take the Spaniard from the pack of golfers tied for third largely because he was able to remain consistent alongside partner Tiger Woods.
The only real hiccup was a bogey at five. Other than that, he was on cruise control, taking birdies at 9 and 14. He then went par the rest of the way until he dropped a solid birdy on 17, a hole Woods would bogey.
