Masters 2012 Leaderboard: Tiger Woods and Stars Who'll Bounce Back in Round 2

Tim DanielsJun 7, 2018

Augusta National Golf Club was the star throughout the opening round of the Masters on Thursday, as golfers struggled to gain any momentum on the famous course. Even the sport's biggest names were left to grind out average rounds and hope for a better day tomorrow.

Let's take a look at three stars, who finished at even par or worse in Round 1, who will have better outings on Friday. For a complete look at the current leaderboard, check out the tournament's official site.

Tiger Woods

Woods was actually on pace to post a solid number before two straight bogeys to end his round, leaving him at even par. He settled in nicely after being a little wild off the tee early, but won't be happy he gave away two shots at the end.

He won't be overly concerned about the round, however, because Woods has never been quick out of the gates. As long as he doesn't dig himself a major hole early, he's confident he can make up ground over the final three days to finish on top.

Since nobody has gone super low, there won't be a ton of work to do for Woods to set himself up for a weekend charge. I still think he's the favorite to win another Masters title despite the average start.

Justin Rose

Like Woods, Rose also finished at even par. He entered the tournament as one of the favorites to capture the green jacket, but wasn't able to generate any momentum throughout the day. He did play steady, though, which is what you like to see.

He only had one bogey, so it's not like he was hitting the ball all over the course like some other guys. Now he just needs to focus on finding more ways to set himself up to get looks at birdie. A modest streak of two or three early tomorrow puts him right in contention.

Rose has the type of game a golfer needs to conquer Augusta as well as the mindset to battle Woods or Rory McIlroy down the stretch. Don't count him out.

Adam Scott

Scott ended last season on fire with several strong performances including a win at the Bridgestone Invitational, which made it seem like he was setting himself up for a monster 2012. So far, the results haven't matched the hype.

He was at four-over par at one point during the front nine before righting the ship down the stretch to hold firm at three-over. It's not an ideal position to find yourself in after one day, but with nobody else playing extraordinary, it's not a death sentence either.

If he can find his rhythm again on Friday, it won't take much to get back in the thick of things. A little bit of progress each day and he'll be right there on Sunday. He's got the ability to make it happen.
