NBA Rumors: Phoenix Suns Wasting Time in Offering Steve Nash Huge Deal
The Phoenix Suns can throw all the money they want at star point guard Steve Nash, but the future Hall of Famer isn't going to pledge his future to the team, because they won't be championship contenders for many more years.
The Suns have reportedly offered Nash a very nice two-year contract, according to Hoopsworld, but that doesn't mean that Nash will re-sign with the franchise in the summer, even if that offer trumps what anyone else is willing to pay.
"Sources close to the process say the Suns have put the idea of a two-year $20 million offer on the table, which is far and away more money than anyone in free agency is going to offer the 38-year-old Nash. If the Suns come off the dime on a third year, the odds they are losing Nash are slim.
Nash has earned north of $119 million in his NBA career, so it’s safe to say money may not be the prime motivator and with Nash, who is quirkier than most, pegging exactly how this will go down is not easy.
"
Nash doesn't need money at this stage of his career—he needs a championship ring, which is something unattainable in Phoenix right now.
The Suns are far away from being a championship contender, so Nash's best move in the offseason will be to sign with a title contender for less money.
Phoenix is just wasting their time with Nash, because it's clear that he won't re-sign. Even if the Suns do give in and offer him a lot of money for three years instead of two, there's no point for Nash to sign that deal when he needs to win now.
The Suns had a good run with Nash, but this era is about to end. The team needs to move on and find a good long-term replacement for him at point guard. Drafting North Carolina point guard Kendall Marshall would be a good first step in this process. The Tar Heels leader is a solid playmaker and really makes his teammates better.
The Suns cannot afford to put off their inevitable rebuild by signing Nash to another contract. His time in Phoenix is over, and it's time for the team to move. They must respect his desire to win a title and allow him to leave.
He gave everything to the organization and the fans, but unfortunately the team wasn't able to capture its first NBA title.
It's nice to see the Suns trying to give Nash a nice contract extension, but signing it would not only be a bad move for him, it would be a poor move for the team as well.
