Big Ten Football Morning Coffee: Beware the Ohio State Defensive Line
Rise and shine, friends. Here's what's going down in the Big Ten today.
Urban Meyer has great things to say about his defense through five spring practices. Defensive tackles John Simon and Johnathan Hankins were both praised by Urban Meyer for "disrupting everything," and the defense has beaten the offense both times the units have competed this spring.
As far as praise for the offense goes—hey, how about that defense!
Jerry Sandusky is back in court for another preliminary hearing, this one about a request to drop the charges against him (that request has since been withdrawn). Attorney Joe Amendola told reporters that a statement would be forthcoming later this morning.
Meanwhile, Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett's office blasted ESPN for its report on Paterno's firing, which laid most of the blame at Corbett's feet and insinuated the firing was part of a larger, unrelated squabble. Corbett launched the Jerry Sandusky investigation and sat on Penn State's Board of Trustees.
Michigan TE Brandon Moore is finally getting a chance to shine in his senior season after waiting patiently through a spread offense and a crowded depth chart. Also, RB Fitz Toussaint isn't taking his feature role for granted. "Somebody could be right behind you," said Toussaint, "trying to take your spot at every moment." He would know, having done exactly that to Vincent Smith last year.
Jordan Canzeri, who was Iowa's presumptive starting tailback before an ACL tear felled him last week, is expected to miss 5-6 months in recovery. A return for Big Ten play isn't out of the question, but considering Canzeri played last season as a true freshman, perhaps a redshirt season is in order.
