Masters Predictions 2012: Former Winners with No Chance of Nabbing Green Jacket

Mike ChiariApr 5, 2012

There have been a lot of different winners in the storied history of the Masters, and while some of them include iconic names like Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods, others have been far more anonymous and remain unknown to most casual golf fans.

Over the past five years in particular, the Green Jacket has gone to an unexpected winner almost every time. That speaks to the overall depth of talent nowadays and proves that anyone can win any give tournament. With that said, though, there are some former winners that would certainly shock the world if they were to reign victorious once again.

Here are three former Masters winners who simply don't have a realistic shot of donning the Green Jacket for a second time.

Angel Cabrera

Angel Cabrera shocked the world in 2009 when he held off stiff competition from some of the world's elite players to win the Masters, but the chances of him doing it again certainly aren't good.

The Argentinian is a gamer who has proven himself in big spots of the course of his career with two major victories, but when you consider how poorly he has played in the early going this season, he doesn't seem likely to be in the mix.

In six PGA tournaments this season, Cabrera has only made the cut twice. Although he is coming off a solid 21st-place showing in the Shell Houston Open, his overall game isn't anywhere near good enough to win the Masters.

Perhaps Cabrera will find a way to pull it all together on the big stage, but I don't see it happening.

Charl Schwartzel

South African Charl Schwartzel went from unknown to Masters winner seemingly overnight last year as he turned in an incredible final-round performance to secure the Green Jacket.

Schwartzel never really built off that magical performance, however, and you would be hard pressed to say that he is better now than he was when he won dramatically a year ago. In fact, his play has been quite rocky as of late and not reflective of a Masters winner.

Schwartzel has missed the cut at the past two tournaments he has participated in and has broken 70 just once in his past four rounds. Schwartzel is obviously having a rough go of it right now and to make things worse, he won't be able to sneak up on anyone this year.

I believe the element of surprise had a lot to do with his victory last year, but that won't be a factor this time around as he'll have a target on his back.

Trevor Immelman

Trevor Immelman took everyone by surprise when he held off Tiger Woods to win the 2008 Masters by three strokes, but since that time Immelman has been just another guy on tour.

He hasn't picked up a single victory on any tour since that time and he has rarely been in true contention. Winning a huge tournament like the Masters can often serve to lift the game of a golfer, but that simply hasn't been the case for Immelman.

At the time of his Masters win, Immelman was being called the best pure ball striker in the game by some analysts, but things have gone awry ever since. Immelman has made the cut in just three of his six tournaments this season.

He is coming off an 11th-place showing at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, but Immelman has gone back to being just another guy on tour who isn't a legitimate threat.
