BCS Officials Craft 4 Proposals to Fix College Football's Broken Postseason Form

Wes ODonnellJun 2, 2018

Sick and tired of the BCS making the final call on who plays for the national championship?

Don't worry, you're far from being alone with that feeling, and you damn well know it.

That being said, BCS officials have finally come together to discuss a different postseason and have reportedly narrowed things down to four different proposals.

Steve Wieberg of USA Today reports:

"

The plans range from a long-discussed "plus one" format — after the bowls play out, selecting two teams to meet for the national championship — to a heretofore undisclosed four-team playoff proposal that could expand the semifinals to preserve an annual Big Ten-vs.-Pacific-12 matchup in the Rose Bowl.

"

All in all, the varying plans (which Wieberg discusses in complete detail) would each bring us some form of additional postseason play that doesn't directly hinge on the two top teams in the BCS rankings meeting for the national championship.

However, is there any one plan in particular in the lead to fix the mess at season's end?

Not according to BCS executive director Bill Hancock (via Wieberg):

"

There is no leader in the clubhouse, and frankly that's just fine at this stage ... I think we're moving toward consensus ... I still think we're on track for making a decision before the first of July, before midsummer.

"

A decision this summer would be ideal considering the BCS' contract with the conferences expires at the end of the 2013 season. Making headway now on what would be the future of college football is their only option.

(Should you want to read up on each specific deal, USA Today has a copy of a two-page summary that outlines the plans and what will be discussed at the BCS meetings later this month.)

It is largely agreed that college football needs some sort of alteration for its postseason format. This season, in particular, drew up a number of intriguing debates regarding which team truly deserved a shot against the then-undefeated LSU Tigers.

A playoff, or possibly a "plus-one" format, would alleviate some of that.

Then there is the question of how the BCS formula will be worked—whether it stays the same, changes, adds, etc.

All in all, it appears the BCS and the conferences are working on possibly making a change for the better. This is only the beginning, but at least they're getting something started.
