Barcelona vs AC Milan: Barca Dominant in Controversial Champions League Win

Wes ODonnellJun 2, 2018

Playing to a sloppy, goalless draw at San Siro put all of the pressure on defending champion Barcelona in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League quarterfinal against AC Milan.

In typical Catalan giant fashion, Barca rose to the occasion and slammed home three goals en route to their fifth straight Champions League semifinals appearance.

The win at Nou Camp didn't come without controversy, as two of the reigning champs' goals came via penalties.

The first was undeniable, but the second drew the full ire of the Rossoneri.

Naturally, Lionel Messi made them pay the price both times, as he became the youngest-ever player to score 50 Champions League goals—the second was his 51st.

AC Milan can complain all they want, but they were absolutely dominated on the stat line.

Barca outshot the Rossoneri 21-3 (8-1 on goal) and held possession 62 percent of the time. The leading stats for AC Milan were a whopping 19 fouls, four offside calls and seven yellow cards as their Champions League campaign came to an end.

Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola was quoted saying (via ESPN):

"

You can talk all you want about referees but that makes it five straight semifinals, the fruits of our talent and a lot of work. We deserved more than to just get through, so I'm satisfied.

"

Andrés Iniesta added the third goal for the Catalans a few minutes into the second half.

Now, Barcelona wait to see today if they're traveling to Stamford Bridge for a showdown with English power Chelsea, or if they're heading to Lisbon to take on Benfica. The Blues currently hold a 1-0 aggregate lead and take the pitch in West London at 2:45 p.m. ET.

Bayern Munich, meanwhile, took care of business against French power Marseille and await the winner of Real Madrid and Apoel Nicosia. Los Blancos already hold a 3-0 aggregate lead, and it looks very much like the Spanish power will be visiting Germany come April 17.

Bayern and Barca have each made finals appearances in the last two years with the German side falling short to Inter in 2010 and the Catalans winners over Manchester United a year ago.
