Hector Macho Camacho: Child Abuse the Latest Chapter in His Troubled Legacy
Hector "Macho" Camacho has turned himself into authorities after being charged with allegations of child abuse, adding another dark chapter to a tumultuous life.
ESPN reports Camacho turned himself into Florida authorities and is now free on bond.
""The 49-year-old Camacho posted a $5,000 bond at the Orange County Jail in Orlando on Monday and was released. According to the arrest affidavit, Camacho surrendered on a warrant that records show was filed by the state attorney's office in November."
"
Camacho is a former boxing champion, but that doesn't mean he has led a charmed life. His past is peppered with alcohol and drug abuse that has left many to wonder how much more he could have left in the ring.
The latest allegations are the most damaging to a fighter whose legacy has meant so much to Puerto Rican boxing fans.
As the ESPN report states, Camacho's wife had to file a couple of domestic abuse complaints during their marriage, one that ended in divorce several years ago. Amy Pavuk of the Orlando Sentinel paints an awful picture with the current allegations.
""Camacho, 49, is accused of picking up his son by the neck, slamming him on the ground and stomping on him."
"
Camacho, for his part, is treating the allegations with surprise. The report cites a statement from his attorney.
""Mr. Camacho immediately and voluntarily reported...when he learned that a complaint had been filed against him....Mr. Camacho only recently learned of the complaint and accordingly voluntarily reported to officials so that this matter can be resolved. He maintains a good relationship with his sons and all would like to put this matter behind."
"
The charges may be as simple as an overzealous observer or as grave as a boxing legend who continues to grossly tread over the line.
Camacho is as glorified for his tenacious style as he is used as a cautionary tale for other boxers. He is a rare fighter who holds titles in three weight classes, winning the super lightweight, lightweight and junior welterweight belts in the 1980s.
However, those triumphs didn't come without out-of-the ring issues.
There were the well-known problems with alcohol and drugs that followed him since the boxer hit his prime, but there was also an incident in 2005 that could have seen the former champ serve serious prison time.
As Fox Sports reports, Camacho was arrested in 2005 for burglary of a computer store. When arrested, he was found to have ecstasy on him.
Instead of a seven-year prison stay, though, he was given a break when the judge suspended most of his sentence and gave him a year of probation. But Camacho would later violate that probation and be forced to serve two weeks in jail.
He continues to be a paradox of an athlete, someone who is unrelenting in the ring—his last bout was in 2009 at the age of 47. Yet there is nothing admirable about Camacho outside of the ring, as he continues to show that restraint, decency and common human kindness are not gifts that complement what we see him deliver in the ring.
