Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s 3 Most Volatile Clashes with Floyd Sr.

Takeo SportsApr 4, 2012

Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Floyd Mayweather Sr. are father and son, and this will never change. Fighting is also part of who they are, even in their relationship, and that might never change, either.

Junior wasn’t even walking yet when his father, Floyd Mayweather Sr., started teaching him how to punch. Well, since the past decade, Pretty Boy is aiming his punches to his first trainer, his father.

It seems like Floyd Sr. always wanted the best for his son, wanting him to be as close to perfection as possible. As for Floyd Jr., he always wanted to be the best of the best. How can a father and son have the same passion, but be so far apart from each other?

Now that Pretty Boy is at the top, he is there all alone without the man who he once called dad.

Read until the third clash, where you can see the video of Mayweather Jr. and Sr. almost fighting each other in an intense conversation. These man can't be left alone in the same room, ever.

Clash No. 1: Junior Fires His Father in 2000

1 of 4

The years went by and the son became a terrific amateur boxer with a 84-6 record. His father emphasized a lot on defense and a stiff jab. The son became so successful to display the teaching of his father that he never had cuts or bruises after fights, thus leading to his nickname, “Pretty Boy.”

In 1993, everything was about to change. Floyd Mayweather Sr. was found guilty of illegal drug trafficking, which led to jail time. Some think that Junior never forgave his father for leaving him. Roger Mayweather took over the coaching job to help him win the bronze medal in the 1996 Olympics and his 14 first professional bouts.

When released of prison, Mayweather Sr. took over the training job of Roger in 1996. He was in the corner of his son in 1998 when he grabbed the WBC junior lightweight title.

At the beginning of 2000, Mayweather Jr. fired Mayweather Sr. as his manager. Following his next fight, the tension was at its maximum between the father and son, which led to Junior firing his own dad as his trainer this time.

In 2004, Money May explained that his father was putting too much pressure on him to be perfect, which led to the confrontation. He also said that the chemistry was better with Roger. Was that the only reason? There had to be some more hard feelings between them to explain this.

The son once booted the father from his training facility, evicted him from a home that he owned and repossessed a car he was driving. They reportedly didn't have a cordial conversation for nearly seven years, a time during which Floyd Sr. once even threatened to train Oscar de la Hoya to defeat his son, but later refusing to do so.

Clash No. 2: Brief Hope in 2006-2007

2 of 4

In 2006, Roger Mayweather served jail time for his brawl during the Zab Judah fight. In the video, you can clearly see Mayweather's trainer jumping in the ring to fight Judah.

It was the perfect event for a hope of reconciliation between Pretty Boy and Mayweather Sr. His father showed up at his gym and they worked things out.

However, it didn’t last long. As soon as Roger Mayweather was out of prison, the rivalry between Roger and Floyd Sr. started all over again. It led to awkward situations for Money May, who opted to retain Roger as his trainer.

Floyd Sr. mentioned at that point that “the father-son relationship was 'back to square one,' for choosing Roger over his own father again.”

Clash No. 3: Will They Ever Forgive Each Other After That One?

3 of 4

The final chapter of this rivalry happened in 2011 and was aired during a 24/7 episode of HBO for the upcoming bout of Pretty Boy and Victor Ortiz.

Floyd Sr. was visiting his son’s gym for the day and things degenerated. This video is well worth watching!

Floyd Sr. started things by mentioning that he made Pretty Boy by training him. Money May seems to still have hard feelings toward his father being locked up.

“You can’t train nobody when you’re locked up,” said Junior.

“I am the best (trainer),” told Floyd Sr.

“No you’re not. You’re not even close to him. Roger made me,” replied his son.

Bodyguards didn’t know how to react. The tension was palpable; no one seemed to find the appropriate way to interfere between the father and son.

“Get out of my gym,” shouted Floyd Jr.

“Roger Mayweather made the Mayweather name and I’ll take it to the next level. I’m not no Junior,” concluded Pretty Boy.

The Future for Floyd Jr. and Sr.

4 of 4

Even after almost 20 years of rivalry, the Mayweather family is still torn between the father and the son. Will this war ever be over?

In a Hollywood movie, Floyd Sr. and Jr. would team together to fight Pac-Man and they would end up with a successful dad and son relationship.

This is not a movie. This is real life. While Money May might never face Pacquiao, he might never be able to work things out with his father, either. A dad and son relationship journey to the title could have been a perfect story for the Pretty Boy, but instead he will have to live for the rest of his life with his drama.
