Texas Tech Football: Recruiting Visit to Lubbock Takes a Wrong Turn
As we get out of March and into April, we're seeing more and more teams pick up their recruiting pitches by getting kids to campus for visits during the spring games. Texas Tech is no different in this regard, as they hoped to got plenty of kids to Lubbock for the festivities. Tuberville did get some prospects there, as folks watched the Red Raiders finish spring off with a flurry of touchdowns and yards in the Red-Black Game.
Unfortunately, the spring game in Lubbock was short four recruits for the Red Raiders. From Red Raiders Sports, we get a nice little story that reminds us these college football recruits really and truly are kids.
Devin Lauderdale, a Texas Tech wide receiver commit, and three other recruits from the Houston area had designs to road trip it to Lubbock for the festivities. Unfortunately, their plan went awry in a big way. In an effort to get from Houston to Lubbock, the four-man crew of recruits found themselves in Nacodoches, Texas.
For those of you not well versed in Texas geography, that is not even close, folks.
Not an over-shooting, but rather a full opposite-direction move after getting a little ways up the road. The drive from Houston to Lubbock was already a nine-hour feat; after their wrong turn, they still faced nine hours to get to Lubbock for the spring game.
So Lauderdale, along with Reggie Chevis (ILB), Tavares Garner (CB) and Arthur Lockett (RB) had a decision to make: try to get to Lubbock or just go home. The four wisely elected to head on back. Sometimes you just have to cut bait.
Now sure, you could look at this and wonder why the kids were not using their GPS devices, especially in an era where every smart phone has their own special map service or three. But the fact of the matter is that Lauderdale is taking it in stride, and considering everyone ended up safe and sound, really, we can just laugh at the situation.
Believe me, these guys are not the first, nor will they be the last, recruits to get lost on the way to a school. The good thing is at least it wasn't the dad getting the kids lost on the trip; that's happened a time or two before, too.
