Why John Calipari Will Have Wildcats Back in the Title Game in 2013
John Calipari has finally reached the promise land with a national championship to put on his resume. With most of his players being one and done, the questions start. Can he be a repeat champion?
The last team to do this was Billy Donovan’s Florida team in 2006 and 2007. The only difference is Donovan had his whole starting lineup back to help make this happen.
The NBA is one thing that never has hurt Calipari, who continues to produce top-rated teams and lottery picks. Calipari is one of the most elite coaches to ever grace the hardwood, and a few players leaving will not affect him.

Maybe the Wildcats won’t be your preseason favorite, but they will be well coached and hungry to win. They will also be in Atlanta in the final four again as well.
Calipari will have to start from scratch to build another championship team, but what is new? This should be no problem for Calipari though Derrick Rose, John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins left after one year, and Calipari never lost a step or sleep over it.
When Anthony Davis came to the Wildcats, he was not expected to have a breakout season like he did as a freshman. With the help and coaching of Calipari, Davis was the Naismith winner, M.O.P of the NCAA Tournament and most likely the No. 1 pick in the draft. This only proves that Calipari can bring the most out of any player coming through his program.
This year’s team might have helped Calipari in a way that they didn’t even know. By bringing Calipari a championship only means that Kentucky is a household name if it wasn’t before. All this will do is attract big name recruits like Shabazz Muhamed and Nerlens Noel, who are still yet not committed.
If top recruit Shabazz Muhamed was to come to Kentucky, you could punch Kentucky’s ticket to Atlanta early because Calipari will have him in NBA form before the first game of the season.
We can’t forget the players that are already coming to Kentucky to make their own history at Kentucky. The Wildcats already have three commits for next year that will be sure to make a splash in Rupp Arena.
Archie Goodwin, Alex Poythress and Willie Cauley are all talented players and are all top-10 recruits at their respective position. If everything goes as planned, these players will be replacing Michael Kidd- Gilchrist, Doron Lamb and Terrance Jones. Big shoes to fill, but they will be up to the task with a little push from Calipari.
Another thing that will solidify another national championship is that players will buy into Calipari's system. One thing that has hurt past Calipari coached teams is selfish play and individual accolades.
After this Kentucky team Calipari will not have a problem with that anymore. This is the only team that actually played like a team with one thing in common—winning a national championship, and it showed throughout the tournament.
Before, the Kentucky coach could never say that he won a championship, and now that he can, players will be all ears. Who wouldn’t want to listen to a future Hall of Fame coach with numerous NBA players?
Finally, let’s not forget the players who aren’t going to the NBA and are going to return for another season. Although they really didn’t see any real action this season, you can guarantee they will be ready to step into their roles.
Players like Kyle Wiltjer and Sam Malone should have solid seasons next year as they enter their sophomore years. Practicing with and NBA-caliber team could do everything but hurt you in your development as a player.
Hopefully next year when Kentucky is cutting the nets down after a repeat championship the riots in Kentucky are smaller.
