WrestleMania 28 Results: Brock Lesnar's Return Shouldn't Overshadow Epic WWE PPV

Adam WellsJun 7, 2018

While Brock Lesnar is going to be the talk of WWE today, and likely for a long time to come, his return to Raw does not take away from what was a really stellar WrestleMania event.

There were rumors floating around this weekend that Lesnar might show up on the big show to cost The Rock his match with John Cena, or vice versa.

Instead, we got a night filled with clean finishes and definitive endings that set up WWE for the rest of the year. We also saw the end of an era and the return of a hero to bring down the established order in WWE.

The event started out in poor fashion, with Sheamus beating Daniel Bryan in 18 seconds. It wasn't necessarily that Bryan was squashed that rubbed people the wrong way. It was the fact that these two stars, who had the potential to put on a good match, were able to do nothing.

Things really kicked into gear with the Undertaker vs. Triple H with Shawn Michaels as special referee in a Hell In a Cell match. This match had a lot to live up to, with last year's match being so well-regarded and the two WrestleMania shows prior to that, when Undertaker and Michaels had classic matches.

Not only did they meet the expectations we put on them, they far exceeded our expectations. It was a brutal match that had a very old school Hell In a Cell feel to it, even if they didn't go crazy with the spots. (Given their respective ages, that is probably a good thing.)

The final two matches with CM Punk vs. Chris Jericho and The Rock vs. John Cena delivered exactly what the fans wanted.

Punk and Jericho did not have the crowd until late in the match, but their work before that was strong and the finish worked to perfection.

Rock and Cena had the crowd eating out of the palm of their hands. No one wanted to see Cena leave Miami with a win over the hometown hero who was wrestling his first singles match in nine years.

It was a special moment seeing the crowd go nuts when Rock won, and the kind of closure that this feud needed.

Lesnar stole all the spotlight on Monday night, and the possibilities with him and Cena are certainly far bigger than anything else WWE could have done.

But looking at the two nights on their own, WrestleMania deserves to be praised for the wonderful show that it was.
