7 Better Ways Carlos Beltran Could Have Spent His $10K Gift to Jon Niese

Alex OttJun 3, 2018

After years of mockery from Carlos Beltran about his broken, grotesque nose, Jon Niese finally underwent rhinoplasty to repair it.

The best part for Niese was that part of Beltran's heckling included a promise to pay for the new honker.

$10,000 later, Beltran had helped a former teammate look better and breathe better, but that's still a lot of money for something that only benefits a man who's already a millionaire.

Here's a look at seven more interesting ways Carlos Beltran could have spent $10,000.

Buy 1,000 Pulled Pork Sandwiches from Blue Smoke at Citi Field

1 of 7

Any fan that has ever been to Citi Field knows that Blue Smoke is the place to go if you’re looking for delicious food, particularly barbecue. At $10 a sandwich, can you imagine how much Beltran’s image would have improved if he fed 1000 fans?

With all the great food and entertainment choices available on the concourse behind center field, it's easy to lose track of the game waiting on line, but if Carlos Beltran had it delivered to you, you get the best of both worlds.

Buy 10,000 Mega Millions Tickets

2 of 7

Last week’s Mega Millions jackpot of $640 million was a lottery record.  For $10,000, Beltran would still have been a long shot to win, but his chances would have greatly improved.

$640 million later, think about how many more nose jobs (or islands) Beltran could buy. With all that money, he certainly could have done some incredible things for all the cities he's played in, his native country, and kids who love the game everywhere.

Fly Sandy Alderson to Florida for Sprng Training

When Sandy Alderson's Twitter page hit the web, it immediately received media attention for the wrong reason.  Within his first five tweets, Alderson had mentioned that he was driving down to Port St. Lucie instead of flying because he was bringing his dog who hated planes.

Immediately afterwards, he became a source of comedic relief in the media as they played off the Mets' financial troubles by saying the team could not even afford to fly their general manager down to Spring Training.

With $10,000, it's safe to say Beltran could have paid for Alderson, his family, and his dog.

Support R.A. Dickey and His Climb

4 of 7

While Jon Niese definitely needed a new nose (that thing was tough to look at), R.A. Dickey and his charity certainly could have used the money more when he climbed Mount Kilimanjaro to raise awareness for sex trafficking.

Especially with pleas from the Mets to not climb it, saying they would void his contract if he got injured, it would have been a very touching moment for Dickey had Beltran supported him on his journey.

Buy Jose Reyes' Dreadlocks on Ebay

After signing with the Marlins, Jose Reyes was forced to cut his hair due to their strict grooming policy.  Once it became known that he hadn’t cut his hair since 2007, the event became quite a spectacle and was even broadcast live by MLB Network.

Reyes eventually saved his disappearing dreads and sold them on Ebay to a winning bidder for $10,200. Although a weird keepsake, Beltran would have benefited the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Buy 700 Rawlings Little League Gloves for Inner City Kids

6 of 7

At $14.25 per mitt, what a great way it would be to be an ambassador for baseball by donating 700 gloves to various Little League programs in the New York and St. Louis areas.

Particularly in urban areas, not everyone can afford a baseball glove or has the space to play, so if Beltran could make affordability a non-issue, he would help spread the game to hundreds of new players who wouldn't have been able to play without his help.

Make a Bet with Niese and Have the Winner Donate $10,000 to Charity

7 of 7

Being professional baseball players, money is clearly not an issue for Jon Niese or Carlos Beltran.  Therefore, instead of Carlos just giving Jon $10,000, they should have made a wager on the upcoming 2012 season.

For example, if Niese struck out Beltran, Beltran would have to donate $10,000 to a charity of Niese's choice, or if Beltran were to take Niese yard, Beltran's charity would receive equal compensation.

With both players being millionaires, the important thing is to give to others, not make the rich even richer.
