WrestleMania 28: Why Eve's Heel Turn Will Be Wasted

Sharon GlencrossMay 31, 2018

As most will know by now, at WrestleMania 28, conniving diva Eve Torres turned heel on Zack Ryder.

Well, okay, it was incredibly obvious to everyone—except poor Zack, apparently—that Eve was already a heel. She was vain, obnoxious, self-involved and has already admitted on TV she has no problem using men to garner herself publicity and fame.

For all his YouTube watching, it seems Ryder never actually bothered to watch clips of the show he was on, otherwise he would have known what the Diva Search winner was like all along.

Her actions at WM simply made it official and proved, once and for all, her attempts to rekindle her friendship with Ryder were nothing more than a cruel ruse.

Not only that, she is now the main reason beloved SmackDown general manager Teddy Long is gone from the company. (Her interference distracted Ryder long enough for The Miz to hit the Skull-Crushing Finale on Ryder and pick up the win, giving Team Johnny the victory and allowing Laurinaitis to now run both Raw and SmackDown.)

So, as the most despised woman in the company, Eve is all set to run over the division as the most dominant heel diva ever, right?

Eh, let's not get ahead of ourselves. There are few reasons Eve's heel turn and her subsequent momentum could be squandered by the WWE's often-incompetent booking team.

Let's have a look at just some of them.

Another Heel Is Already Divas Champion

The next logical step for Eve as a dominant female heel would be winning the Divas Championship. It seems like a smart move. It would help put her in the spotlight more, as well as keeping the belt relevant. Eve is one of the most over heels in the company, and the struggling mid-card belt could only benefit from its association with her.

Except there's one major problem: Beth Phoenix. She's already holding the championship for the heel side.

Not only that, but she and Eve have formed an alliance in recent times, even teaming to take on the team of Kelly Kelly and Extra host Maria Menounos at WrestleMania 28.

So, how is Eve supposed to snag the title when WWE dislikes making heel vs. heel matches and she's strongly linked with the current title-holder on screen? Giving her a match at this point makes no sense. She's going to have to wait for Beth to lose it, then go after the best from there.

There Are No Credible Challengers for Her as a Heel

Okay, so just where are Eve's challengers?

  • Tamina Snuka showed promise in her program with Beth Phoenix last month, but since then has been quickly forgotten and left to languish on C show NXT.
  • Rosa Mendes is manging the tag team champs.
  • Natalya recently turned babyface, but is currently stuck with a truly hideous flatulence storyline that has seen her become a joke.
  • Alicia Fox has largely been forgotten about and is barely on Raw anymore.
  • Teddy Long's girlfriend Aksana certainly has the look WWE likes (and no doubt she is eager to gain revenge after Eve's heinous actions at the show last night), but she's a complete disaster in the ring.

Then, of course, there's Kelly Kelly. There has been lingering tension between the former best friends for a while now, as Kelly voices her disgust at Eve's mistreatment of men. However, Kelly has spent so long being an afterthought in the division, it remains to be seen whether the fans could get behind her strongly in a program with the former NBA dancer.

WWE's Booking Team Finds It Hard to Give Any Diva a Sustained Push

3 of 5

Anyone remember when Christy Hemme was going to be the next big female star in WWE? Or Candice Michelle? Or Ashley Massaro? Or Maryse? Or Kelly Kelly?

The list goes on...

Let's face it: WWE's booking team have a history of giving divas big pushes and then just dropping them without a word of warning. It's partly why WWE's floundering women's division is in the state its in—anytime fans get behind a new girl, she gets taken off TV and sent to NXT, or relegated to short backstage segments.

We'd like to think Eve is different and that she will get a sustained push from the company for a chance to flourish into a major female star, but if past booking woes are anything to go by, she probably won't be.

She Has to Get Her Comeuppance Soon

Eve has committed a litany of despicable deeds since turning to the dark side: she's played with Zack Ryder's heart, viciously tore apart Ryder's friendship with John Cena, blasted former friend Kelly Kelly over Twitter and YouTube, and caused Team Teddy to lose at Mania, thus sending Teddy Long packing.

Per WWE booking, the heel diva has to pay for her sins—and soon.

Possibly she will end up genuinely falling for Zack only for him to dump her, or Kelly will end up beating her soundly in a singles match. While this may be deeply fulfilling for the audience, most of whom despise Eve, it will likely derail any momentum she has been building.

Eve May Be a Better Babyface

Far from being an irritating female character that the fans want to hate and jeer vociferously—like Vickie Guerrero or Impact Wrestling's Karen Jarrett—the talented, charismatic and naturally likable Eve may simply be better suited to being a babyface.

Hence, why her heel turn will ultimately not work out.
