SEC Football: Changes Could Result in Conferences Taking More Control of Bowls

Barrett SalleeJun 4, 2018

There's no doubt that we are in the middle of a college football revolution that will likely result in even larger conferences and a revised postseason structure.  According to CBSSports.com, part of that postseason structure could result in the conferences taking more control over the bowl system.

Bring it on.

Let's get this out of the way now: Non-BCS bowls are exhibitions. They don't mean anything.  They are rewards to the players, coaches and fan bases for good (or, in some cases, remarkably average) seasons. That's not going to change no matter how the national championship gets decided in the future.

So why not let the conferences decide what bowls are worth keeping and what bowls need to disappear?

It will allow for the market to work.  Simple supply and demand.  If bowls want to sign up with the SEC because it will draw better to their particular city than other conferences, then so be it.  That really wouldn't be much different than the current setup.  The SEC can then, in turn, set the minimum standards based on performance and the bottom line.

In the grand scheme of things, would the landscape of the bowl season look different?  Probably not.  You may have shifts in the pecking order, and you'd certainly have a shake up in the tie-ins; but in reality, college football already is run by conference commissioners, so it only makes sense that the bowl season be run by them as well.
