Florida Football: Meet Brent Pease, Offensive Coordinator of the Florida Gators
Every Monday, The SEC Blog will feature an assistant coach in the SEC. This week, we take a look at new Florida offensive coordinator Brent Pease.
Brent Pease certainly has his work cut out for him.
The first-year offensive coordinator for the Florida Gators is charged with fixing an offense that ranked 105th in the country in total offense in 2011 under one-and-done offensive coordinator Charlie Weis. Not an easy task, but the 21-year coaching veteran has a pedigree.
Pease was the offensive coordinator for the Boise State Broncos in 2011. Those Broncos finished ninth in the nation with a 481.3 yards-per-game average. They finished 11th in the nation through the air, with an average of 309.4 yards per game.
That's nice, but it's not the key issue facing the Florida Gators at the moment. The quarterback position will steal the headlines, but Florida needs to find a between-the-tackles running back—a role that belonged to quarterback Tim Tebow during the glory days of former head coach Urban Meyer.
That's where the questions with Pease arise. Our good friends at CoachesByTheNumbers.com pointed out when he was hired that Pease's offenses routinely struggle in the running game. As an offensive coordinator at the FBS level, Pease has averaged 124.4 yards per game on the ground—an average national ranking of No. 84.
That's not to say that Pease can't succeed in the ground game. Omarius Hines, Mike Gillislee and Mack Brown certainly give him options, and he has stated that finding a "pounding running attack" is Job No. 1 for the Gators.
He has the weapons and has stated the goal, but will he have the time? Florida is a pressure-packed job that, especially after a seven-win season, demands results sooner rather than later.
