Tiger Woods: Power Ranking Best Peformances at Augusta
Tiger Woods has played some great golf at the Masters.
Considering he is arguably the greatest golfer of all time, that's a pretty simple statement. However, which of his performances was the best? He has had some great moments and great tournaments, but there is a definite order.
With Woods' greatness, it is great to just sit back and remember the moments.
4. 2002
Woods won his second straight green jacket in 2002 by outlasting Retief Goosen. The South African played well for three rounds, but he couldn't keep up with Woods on Sunday.
With Goosen shooting a 74, Woods had no problems locking up the jacket with a solid 71 on Sunday. The three-stroke win was his second-highest at Augusta, but it was probably his dullest win.
As exciting as two straight Masters championships are, Woods made it look to easy, which took a lot of excitement out of it.
3. 2001
In 2001, Woods proved that it is incredibly tough to catch him when he has a lead. After a brilliant 66 on Friday, Woods set himself up perfectly for the weekend. His 68 on Saturday put him in first for Sunday, and he buried the field with a second consecutive 68.
Woods was methodical once again, and he was able to ward off a surging David Duval and Phil Mickleson. This win marked the completion of the Tiger Slam, which is still one of the most impressive feats in sports history (winning four straight Major Championships).
Woods used this win to get a landmark achievement named after him, which is pretty impressive. Moreover, this was the tournament that made Woods look officially unbeatable.
2. 2005
Woods has had some great moments in his career, but his greatest moment occurred the last time he won the Masters. The epic chip on the 16th hole exemplified his greatness.
I'm sure Woods has made better golf shots in his life. He's made more clutch shots in his life. However, Woods has never made such a great, clutch shot that demonstrated his flair for the moment so perfectly.
As the ball slowly turns up the Nike symbol, I get chills every time. It's incredible how great of a shot that chip was. Woods went on to win in a playoff, finishing off Chris DiMarco on the first hole.
It was a great win, but that chip was an even greater moment.
1. 1997
World, meet Mr. Woods. He hasn't won a major yet, but he's pretty good.
Woods' 66 on Friday vaulted him into first. His 65 on Saturday put him up by 11 strokes. His 69 on Sunday helped him finish off the 12-stroke annihilation.
There simply has never been a performance like it. Woods eviscerated his opponents. They never stood a chance. At 21 years old, Woods turned the greatest golf performance of all time.
In four short days, Woods let everyone know what he was capable of. This destruction was what made Woods an immediate sensation, and it was the perfect sign of things to come.
