Arsenal Transfers: 5 Big Deals to Get Gunners Fans Dreaming of the Title
Arsenal's seven-game winning streak may have shockingly came to an end, but that's not stopping Gunners fans from aspiring for more than just a top four spot.
Bar the 2-1 loss to QPR, Arsene Wenger's side have looked very good as of late, with the defense solidifying as well as the midfield and attack connecting more. Nothing is certain in football, but it seems like Arsenal have their Champions League qualifying finish for this season and will now look to seal third place above North London rivals Tottenham.
Arsenal fans always feel that their team is always just a few transfers away from a Premier League title, so here are five big deals to get us dreaming...
Lukas Podolski
1 of 6It wouldn't be an Arsenal transfer rumours slideshow without mentioning Lukas Podolski.
I don't want to jinx anything, but this Lukas Podolski to Arsenal deal looks pretty wrapped up. Arsene Wenger is already talking about how Podolski can help Arsenal challenge for the title next season, so if he said that it's hard to imagine that Podolski won't be heading for the Emirates come the summer transfer window.
As a player that would provide strong attacking depth and a reliable backup or partner to Robin Van Persie, Podolski is a clinical finisher as he's proved with his 17 goals for Cologne in the Bundesliga. The German international can play on the wings or, primarily, as a centre forward, and gives Arsenal another forward capable of scoring goals.
Arsenal fans won't want to get ahead of themselves set, but this transfer would give the Gunners the strength in depth they need for a title push.
Jan Vertonghen
2 of 6Jan Vertonghen wants to join Arsenal, with the North London outfit apparently favourites to get his signature.
Although the Gunners currently have a brilliant centre back partnership in Thomas Vermaelen and Laurent Koscielny, their backup defenders are weak, and it shows when a first team player picks up an injury.
Jan Vertonghen would serve as a reliable backup or a squad rotation option to play alongside Vermaelen or Koscielny, and would give Arsenal just the depth they need to prevent one injury from ruining their season.
Riccardo Montolivio
3 of 6Although it's not the most high profile piece of Arsenal transfer gossip, this is still a player Gooners fans should be excited about if the rumours are true.
Arsenal has apparently scouted the 27-year-old Fiorentina midfielder, who is available on a free transfer in the summer. In all honesty, snapping up Montolivo would be a brilliant move. The Italian is a very complete midfielder, showing tons of creativity with his passes and dribbles, and he provides a threat from long shots. Although the Gunners currently have plenty of centre midfielders with Jack Wilshere returning from injury soon, Montolivio would add depth and can certainly be considered for the first team.
He's free, so why not?
Yann M'Vila
4 of 6As you can see, squad depth is key to a strong title challenge.
The reason why Arsenal have slipped from title races time and time again in recent seasons is because one or two injuries derails a chunk of their season and causes them to drop points. Another plus to having strong players outside of the starting lineup is the possibility of an impact substitution—the reason why the Gunners bowed out of the Champions League against AC Milan is arguably because they had no dangerous players who could come off of the bench and change the outcome of the game.
Yann M'Vila is, as people say, the "classic Arsene Wenger transfer." The defensive midfielder is young, plays in Ligue 1, and, most importantly, he's French. The one downside is that he won't come cheap though, especially for a player that would cost about 25 million pounds. After all, the brilliant Alex Song will always be first choice in defensive midfielder, and M'Vila could hinder the progress of the promising young Emmanuel Frimpong.
This transfer is all about depth.
Robin Van Persie's Contract
5 of 6I know, this isn't a transfer. But I think all Arsenal fans can agree that extending Robin Van Persie's contract is more important than any transfer.
Apparently, Arsene Wenger is confident that he can keep Van Persie, as well as Theo Walcott and Alex Song, whose contracts also expire in the summer of 2013. Of course, Wenger wouldn't say that he isn't confident, but nonetheless it's a good thing to hear from a man that always knows best according to Gunners fans.
It would be massive if Arsenal could tie up Van Persie's contract, and would certainly give them a boost to push for the title next season.
Conclusion
6 of 6If all of these transfers materialize, here's what the team would look like.
Szczesny
Sagna Koscielny Vermaelen Gibbs
Song
Arteta Wilshere
Walcott Podolski
Van Persie
Not bad, eh? But the important part is the bench:
Fabianski, Santos, Vertonghen, Gervinho, M'Vila, Montolivo, Oxlade-Chamberlain.
Remember, neither of those are solid, as different formations could be played with Van Persie and Podolski together up top, or Gervinho on the left instead of Podolski, Vertonghen instead of Koscielny, Montolivo instead of Arteta, etc.
Hope you enjoyed this article, it's keeping me dreaming of the title!
