World Football: Top 10 Plays of the Weekend
Karim Benzema is partying like it's 1988.
And that's OK, because David Trezeguet is turning back the clock to the year 2000.
Confused? No worries. All will be explained shortly in this edition of B/R's top 10 plays of the world football weekend.
As usual, there's a healthy dose of the brilliant in our 10 selections. And as those first two sentences hinted, there's also a bit of the bizarre.
Hey, what do you expect when Italian league games are producing nine goals?
Let's get started.
Karim Benzema Channels Marco van Basten
1 of 10Real Madrid beat Osasuna 5-1 on Saturday to maintain their six-point lead atop the Spanish La Liga table.
Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo both scored twice, and Benzema's first—in the seventh minute—was a real classic.
The goal appears at left. It bears a striking resemblance to Marco van Basten's strike for Holland against the USSR in the Euro 88 final.
Here's a side-by-side comparison of the two stunners.
Cristiano Ronaldo Scores a Rocket
2 of 10Not to be outdone, Cristiano Ronaldo thumped home a screamer from about 35 yards in the 37th minute.
What do you say? Which was better?
I'm going with Benzema.
Zarate's Curler
3 of 10Inter Milan won a typically defensive Italian game on Sunday, edging Genoa at home in Andrea Stramaccioni's first game in charge.
The game featured six yellow cards, two red cards, four penalties and nine—yes, nine—goals.
The pick of the bunch was Mauro Zarate's 74th-minute effort, which put Inter ahead 4-2 at the time. Inter won the match 5-4.

A Great Own Goal
4 of 10It's been a stressful weekend, so how about some comic relief?
Here we have Hassan Hissein of Chad scoring an own goal against Bob Bradley's Egypt in a friendly this weekend.
I'll give you a moment to stop chuckling.
Egypt won 4-0.
Celtic on the Brink
5 of 10Celtic defeated St. Johnstone 2-0 on Sunday. The Hoops now need just one more point to clinch the Scottish Premier League title.
Georgios Samaras scored the vital breakthrough goal in the 66th minute. Watch it at left.
Robinho Robbed?
6 of 10Didn't we just have a goal-line controversy?
Well, here's another one.
Robinho opened the scoring for AC Milan against Catania on Saturday with a 34th-minute goal. In the second half, he appeared to have scored another.
The "goal" was ruled out and Milan drew 1-1 at Catania.
See for yourself. Did the ball cross the line?
Simplicio the Best
7 of 10There wasn't anything simple about this cheeky chip by Roma's Fabio Simplicio against Novara.
Roma won the match 5-2.
Juninho Goes Footloose on Macae
8 of 10You might remember Juninho Pernambucano from his days with Lyon (seven straight league titles) and Brazil (um, the 2005 Confederations Cup).
Juninho is 37 now, but he's still scoring excellent goals, like this one for Vasco da Gama against Macae in the Campeonato Brasileiro Serie A.
That's some fancy footwork worthy of Kevin Bacon.
David Trezeguet: Who You Calling Old?
9 of 10Speaking of formerly great attackers now playing in South America, here's the latest handiwork of French international David Trezeguet.
You probably remember Trezeguet scoring the winning goal in the Euro 2000 final, but you might not have known that he's now with River Plate (or that River Plate are in the second flight of Argentine football).
Anyway, even at 34, Trezeguet can still play some beautiful football.
Gatagov's Overhead Kick
10 of 10Finally, one of the truths behind football is that everybody loves a great overhead kick goal.
And here's yet another, courtesy of Tom Tomsk midfielder Alan Gatagov.
Tomsk won the match 2-0.
