2009 NFL Mock Draft: Detroit Lions' First Six Picks

Jason EmbreyJan 18, 2009

I know its early, and the draft process hasn't even started, but if the Detroit Lions draft class unfolded this way, then I think they are headed in the right direction. Here is a look at the Lions' first six picks in the draft.

Round One, Pick One: Aaron Curry, ILB, Wake Forest

I know that a majority of the sports world believes that the Lions need to use this pick to finally get their franchise QB. But what good is a franchise QB when the Lions cant stop anybody on defense. Curry is the best linebacker in the draft, and will make the Lion's defense a little more respectful.

Round One, Pick 20: B.J. Raji, DT, Boston College

This pick is a no-brainer. Raji is a 6'1" 325lbs man-child on the defensive line. The lions defense got exponentially worse with the loss of 340lb DT Shaun Rogers, and Raji looks like the man to fill the void.

Round Two, Pick 33: Victor Harris, DB, Virginia Tech

Another huge hole in the defense was at CB. Harris is a NFL ready corner. His has a lot of size and speed. He is on of the best tackling CBs in this years draft. Has the versatility to play safety. Also may be a factor in the return game.

Round Three, Pick 65: Derrick Williams, WR, Penn State

The Lions are in need of a compliment to WR-phenom Calvin Johnson, and Williams is a good fit on the other side of the field. Williams has great speed and is a good route runner that can take some coverage away from Johnson.

Williams never really lived up to his potential coming out of high school, but should prove his worth in the NFL as a solid No. 2.

Round Three, Pick 82: Nic Harris, SS, Oklahoma

Harris is a big time, hard-hitting safety who is feared by all of his opponents. At 6'3" 230 he is a beast in the secondary. Would be a huge asset to the run defense coming up to put eight in the box. He is kind of a LB tweener and could see time at that position.

Round Five, Pick 129: C.J. Davis, OG, Pittsburgh

Davis is an athletic 6'2" 320 interior lineman. Davis started 42 games in a row for the Panthers and proves to be a tough guy. Davis also shows versatility, playing center for the Panthers also. He is a guy who start the majority of his football career and could start from day one.

Again, I know its early, no pro-days or NFL Combine yet, but this is an early look at a projected core of players to build around. The Lions need to build from the inside-out and this is a start.

As the process unfolds and I learn more of potential prospects, my list will be updated. I hope that this satisfies most of your NFL Draft needs for now.
