WrestleMania 2012: Interesting Stats to Consider for The Undertaker vs. Triple H
When it was announced that The Undertaker and Triple H would face off at WrestleMania for the third time in a Hell in a Cell match, it quickly became apparent that such a match type was the perfect choice for what is being billed as the end of an era.
The Undertaker and Triple H have made Hell in a Cell a famous match that is now a staple in the WWE. It may not happen often, but when it does, it is extremely special, and The Undertaker and Triple H are the two performers who made it that way.
Here are three interesting stats to keep in the back of your mind regarding the respective histories of The Undertaker and Triple H in Hell in a Cell matches.
Either Undertaker or Triple H Have Been in 18 of 23 HIAC Matches
There have only been 23 Hell in a Cell matches since the match debuted at Badd Blood in 1997, and, incredibly, either The Undertaker, Triple H or both have been involved in 18 of them. That means that only five Hell in a Cell matches have taken place without one of those legends, and four of those have come since Hell in a Cell became a pay-per-view in 2009.
Essentially, The Undertaker and Triple H made Hell in a Cell, and there is no other match type that is more perfect for them to have at WrestleMania XXVIII. For as often as both men have been in Hell in a Cell matches, it's quite incredible that they have never gone one-on-one against each other in one. That will all change on Sunday, as the two greatest Hell in a Cell veterans in the business will go at it to end their rivalry once and for all.
Triple H is 6-2 in HIAC Matches
Seeing as Triple H has been one of the most successful wrestlers in the business over the past 15 years or so, it should come as no surprise that his Hell in a Cell record is impeccable. He is 6-2 all-time in the brutal match, with one of those losses coming in a six-man Hell in a Cell match. He has had more success in the cell than anyone else by far, and while Undertaker is heavily favored at 'Mania, that stat is worth noting.
WrestleMania is a completely different animal, especially when you're talking about The Undertaker. But this stat could be used to make Triple H look like the favorite, even though the viewing audience won't buy it. When you add the fact that Triple H was metaphorically inches away from ending The Undertaker's streak last year, Triple H probably looks like the stronger bet from a kayfabe point of view at the very least.
The Undertaker is 5-6-1 in HIAC Matches
As obvious as Triple H's success in Hell in a Cell may seem, The Undertaker's struggles are quite surprising. I suppose you can piece it together in your mind if you really look back, but it's still tough to fathom that The Undertaker has a sub-.500 record of 5-6-1 in a match that was essentially tailor made for him. The casket match will probably be the one that is most synonymous with The Undertaker, but Hell in a Cell isn't far behind.
Again, do what you will with this stat, as they will all be thrown out the window when the match starts. But it's still a juicy little tidbit to nosh on.
Remember that The Undertaker faced Shawn Michaels in the first ever Hell in a Cell match and lost as a debuting Kane destroyed him. Michaels will be refereeing the match on Sunday, and if history has any bearing on what might happen, then it could be a rough night for The Deadman.
