McDonald's All American Game 2012: Shabazz Muhammad's Big Night Changes Nothing

Jun 7, 2018

Earlier this week, Shabazz Muhammad took the dunk contest at the Powerade Jam Fest and turned it into a personal stage, much to the delight of the entertainment-hungry Twitterverse.

Muhammad did the same thing with the McDonald's All-American Game. He exploded out of the gate with nine points in the game's first three minutes and ultimately finished with 21 points on 10-of-18 shooting and six rebounds.

Once again, the Twitterverse was enthused. And it would be, of course, as a good portion of Muhammad's points came on dunks reminiscent of the ones he was throwing down in a contest atmosphere just a couple days earlier.

But nobody should get too carried away with the starring role Muhammad played on Wednesday night. He didn't break new ground, nor did he do anything to prove that he's even better than he's already advertised. The simple truth is that he threw down a lot of dunks and generally looked like a freak of nature in an All-Star game. That's par for the course for All-Star games, no matter what level we're talking about.

So as fun as Muhammad's performance was while it was in motion, nothing has changed. He's still one of the top recruits, if not the top recruit, in the nation. More importantly, he's still healthy. The only things that will be sore today are his wrists, which took a beating from the iron on Wednesday night.

The most notable thing Muhammad did on Wednesday was drop a few hints about where he's going to be playing college ball. Courtesy of Ronnie Flores of ESPN.com, we know Muhammad has narrowed down his college choices to UCLA, Kentucky and Duke. He says the three schools are in no particular order, but he did speak quite fondly of John Calipari's Wildcats, who have already scored a couple of top recruits.

"If I went to Kentucky," Muhammad said, "that can be a really good class."

If it sounds like he's leaning towards Kentucky, that's probably because he apparently is leaning towards Kentucky.

Via Kentucky basketball blogger Aaron Kall, Jon Rothstein from CBS New York offered a helpful scoop recently:

Sounds about right. Calipari attracts top recruits like the Death Star tractor beam attracts wayward starships. The recruiting magic he worked last year has helped put the Wildcats in the Final Four, and he'll be looking to do the exact same thing with this year's recruiting class.

I'm assuming, of course, that Calipari still very much wants to bring Muhammad aboard. The only reason he wouldn't be would be if Muhammad had shown him something he didn't like during the McDonald's All-Star Game.

Muhammad did nothing of the sort. On Wednesday night, he did nothing except be himself.
