Since Allen Iverson Is No Longer "The Answer," Here's a Solution

Smoove BaylisJan 17, 2009

As everyone knows by now, the Allen Iverson-Chauncey Billups swap earlier this season was done to shake up the core of the Detroit Pistons and to free up over $30 million dollars of cap space coming off the books at the end of the season (Iverson and Sheed's expiring contracts).

Well, the shake up has happened and unfortunately the P Stones are still shaking! Allen Iverson admitted to Chris McCosky of the Detroit News that "The only thing you can attribute it to is chemistry. The chemistry is not there. There's no excuse for it."

Antonio McDyess, the most level headed veteran in the Pistons locker room chimed in saying, "This is not the team I am used to seeing." Well Dice, me either. He went on to say, "There's just no chemistry, you all can even see that, I don't know what it's going to take to get it right." Well Mr. McDyess, I have the solution!

The real answer is to move Allen Iverson and his $21 million dollar contract midseason before the deadline. How so you might ask, the answer lies on the other side of the Ambassador Bridge right in Toronto.

If I had Joe D on speed dial, I would shoot him a text and tell him to call Raptors GM Bryan Colangeo and offer Allen Iverson and Kwame Brown for Jermaine O'Neal and Jason Kapono straight up! It makes good basketball sense for both teams and the money works.

For Detroit, J.O. would bring defense, rebounding, and effective low post scoring when Sheed is letting them fly from deep. He also would help revive the chemistry in the "D" and help the team find their identity by bumping everybody back in their natural position.

That trade would get Detroit back to their winning formula, rugged defense + rebounding + teamwork = Larry O'Brien Trophy in June.

For the Raptors, Allen Iverson could be himself again because they desperately need someone else other than Chris Bosh to create their own shot. They would also be able to speed up their tempo and play more like the Phoenix Suns that Colangelo constructed a few years back in AZ when they were a 60-win team.

This is such a great trade because Jermaine O'Neal would help Detroit salvage this season and compete with the Cavs, Celtics, and sizzling Orlando Magic.

The biggest question of the deal would be if O'Neal can stay healthy. The Pistons' front court is full of high energy defensive guys like Jason Maxiell, Amir Johnson, and Antonio McDyess so coach Michael Curry could limit and monitor Jermaine's minutes until he is 100 percent.

Rasheed Wallace and Jermaine O'Neal who are good friends, would be a force to be reckoned with come playoff time when the pace slows down and teams must grind it out to get buckets.

I'm not saying this trade would catapult Detroit to No. 1 in the power rankings, I'm just saying this would improve their chemistry issue that has plagued them this season.

Joe D is arguably the best GM in the league and he gives off the vibe that he always has a trick up his sleeve. This move would be  reminiscent to the acquisitions that brought the 2004 World Champs together, Chauncey, Rip, Ben Wallace, and Sheed all revived their career at the Palace, why not Jermaine O'Neal?

With Andrea Bargnani's emerging play, O'Neal is expendable and is currently being shopped around the NBA. Rumors out of Miami are that Shawn Marion and his expiring contract along with other pieces will be offered up before the deadline.

For the Detroit Pistons' sake, let's hope they beat Miami to the punch and get back to the stable play that has led to six straight Eastern Conference Championships.
