Friday's Big Weekend Preview

Ryan KlockeMar 29, 2012

Another weekend is upon us, and let me start off with this: Nobody cares about your bracket anymore. If it's busted, join the club. If you're still alive, zip it. Don't want to hear about your office pool and how you need Kentucky to pull one out this weekend against Louisville.

Who cares that you picked Kentucky to win? That's like putting your money on Superman over the bank robber, choosing Oddjob in GoldenEye or betting on whatever opponent is taking on the Portland Trail Blazers. You played it safe—congrats!—and now have a chance to reap the esteemed honor of winning Whatever Pool You're In for 2012.

For the rest of us, we're just going to watch sports for the strict reason that it's awesome to watch sports. Fandom comes first. And considering what's on tap—Final Four (duh) and a possible NBA Finals preview—we're going to blow it out here basketball-wise.

Plus, this is the last installment of this column before baseball season officially starts (that Seattle-Oakland series doesn't count, namely because nobody remembered it was happening). So let's hit the hardwood, and show you some games made for hitting the sports bars.

NCAA Final Four: Kentucky vs. Louisville

1 of 5

When: Saturday, 6:09 p.m. (ET)

TV: CBS

Why You Should Watch: This is for the 0.01 percent, considering the rest of the people here know exactly why they should park themselves on a couch or barstool for this one: Final Four—heated, in-state rivals. A boil-over level of passion that starts fights between old men in dialysis clinics.

We could insert a messenger bag full of rivalry cliches here to further drum up why the No. 1 Wildcats vs. No. 4 Cardinals is a must-see, but it would be like trying to convince you why Auburn vs. Alabama football is an important game. You just know it is.

NCAA Final Four: Kansas vs. Ohio State

2 of 5

When: Saturday, 8:49 p.m. (ET)

TV: CBS

Why You Should Watch: Well, you're already parked in front of the TV from Kentucky vs. Louisville, so there really isn't any good reason for you to skip the second-half of the NCAA semifinals. The fact that it's a matchup of two No. 2 seeds who played each other earlier this year makes it better.

So who wins? Well, we can say this: There's a somewhat, possibly, kind of good chance that the Jayhawks don't end back-to-back games on a 12-0 run.

Chicago Bulls at Oklahoma City Thunder

3 of 5

When: Sunday, 1 p.m. (ET)

TV: ABC

Why You Should Watch: Whenever two of the league's best young stars are on the court at the same time, you and your remote should navigate their way toward said channel. Oh, and there's that little thing about this being a possible NBA Finals preview.

Just look what you've got here: Kevin Durant and Derrick Rose. The best team in the East (Chicago) vs. the West's current No. 1 (Oklahoma City). A break from college basketball, which is always much deserved by this point of the tourney, where you've no doubt seen enough what-was-he-thinking bombs and botched 1-and-1s to fill your fancy/bad-basketball tolerance.

NASCAR Sprint Cup: Goody's Fast Relief 500

4 of 5

When: Sunday, 12:30 p.m. (ET)

TV: Fox

Why You Should Watch: If you're a fan of organized chaos, this is the NASCAR track for you. The Sprint Cup rolls into Martinsville this weekend, which is the shortest track on the circuit—a half mile, that's it. Just a half-mile (you ran longer in third period Phys Ed.) strip of concrete to accommodate 43 cars with 900 horsepower each.

It's loud and claustrophobic, and it's full of fender benders, because bumping and running is how you pass here. This is a go-cart track on a BALCO cocktail; the final laps here produce some of the most entertaining racing you'll see all year.

WrestleMania 28

5 of 5

When: Sunday, 7 p.m. (ET)

Why You Should Watch: Why not? Really. It's fun. It's The Rock vs. John Cena. It's an entertainment spectacle that will take you back to your childhood, when you had dreams of body-slamming and DDT-ing and Stunner-ing everything in sight. Grab some buddies, order it and enjoy a Sunday evening away from regular-season NBA basketball and SportsCenter reruns.

Who cares that it's "not a real sport." The same could be said for the Raptors/Wizards game taking place on the same day. In the end, sports is about being entertained, and the biggest WWE event of the year will no doubt accomplish that.
