College Football Recruiting: 7 Potential Future College QB Controversies
In recruiting, each year starts anew. We almost forget about last year's class because the hype starts up in the current year, especially at the QB position.
Recruiting is a game of numbers, but you also want a QB that is not afraid of competition. However, some schools have signed two QBs in one class or signed back-to-back elite signal-caller prospects in consecutive classes. That's always a sign of a brewing QB schism.
For this read, I'm going to give you seven potential QB controversies that could take place in the college ranks as a result of recruiting.
7. Notre Dame
1 of 7Two recruiting cycles ago, the Irish signed dual threat QB Everret Golson. Golson is only 6'0", 185 pounds, but he has great athleticism.
Last year, the Irish landed 5-star WB prospect Gunner Kiel. I think Kiel has the tools to beat out Tommy Rees this year, but what if he doesn't?
That would give Golson another year to learn the system for 2013 and this time next year, we could be in a Kiel vs. Golson QB controversy in South Bend.
6. Texas A&M
2 of 7Jameill Showers is only a sophomore and then you have Matt Davis and Kohl Stewart coming in this year and next year.
Either Kevin Sumlin is going to be set at the QB position for years to come or he's going to have a controversy on his hands.
Davis has already enrolled early and that's a sign he wants to compete for the job now. Stewart has the skill set to play early, too.
5. Auburn
3 of 7Barrett Trotter has left the team, but Kiehl Frazier will battle Clint Mosely for the Auburn starting QB job this spring and fall.
But another candidate will arrive in the summer: Zeke Pike. Pike is a 6'6", 220-pounder with a cannon for an arm.
He's got some moxie and confidence to his game, so I have my doubts on if he's going to be cool holding a clipboard for long.
4. UCLA
4 of 7Brett Hundley was viewed as the future of the Bruin program, but he's going to have some competition in the future. As Kevin Prince and Richard Brehaut leave Westwood, we're in shape for a battle royal.
Hundley will have to match wits with T.J. Milleweard and maybe even Devin Fuller, two QBs Jim Mora signed this 2012 cycle.
Hundley vs. Millweard vs. Fuller in Westwood in 2013! Be there!
3. Washington
5 of 7Washington signed two QBs last cycle in Jeff Lindquist and Cyler Miles. Keith Price will still be on the roster next season in 2013.
But when Price leaves Seattle, we're in store for an arms race between Miles and Lindquist for the new Husky QB starter. Both have good dual threat skill sets, but Lindquist may be the better passer while Miles is slightly a better runner.
Sark's going to have develop both of them when Price leaves.
2. Texas
6 of 7Davis Ash and Case McCoy didn't impress much last year and now Connor Brewer has been added to the roster in Austin. Brewer is one of the top QB recruits for the 2012 class.
But wait, there's more.
The big deal is going to come when Tyrone Swoopes gets to Austin. Swoopes has a world of hype in Texas and fans see him as the next Vince Young. Next year, things are going to get pretty interesting as far as the starting QB gig for Texas goes.
1. USC
7 of 7When Matt Barkley leaves after this year, the Trojans will have to replace another legend, just like they did when Carson Palmer left in 2003. Back then it was an upwards of a four-man race, but this time it's going to be a three-man sweep.
Jesse Scroggins can't shake the injury bug and I think Cody Kessler and Max Wittek have passed him in the coaches' eyes.
Scroggins will compete with the two 2011 signees and Lane Kiffin will be pressed day in and day out with "who's the starter?" questions in exactly a year from now.
