UNC Basketball: Complete Guide for Tar Heels to Improve for 2013 Tourney

Ryan RudnanskyMar 26, 2012

It's not really fair to say North Carolina had a disappointing season, but, well, North Carolina had a disappointing season.

Headed into the NCAA tournament, the Tar Heels were supposed to roll over the competition en route to the national championship game. Instead, they flopped against Kansas and didn't even make it into the Final Four.

Any other school would be happy with an Elite Eight appearance. But this isn't any ordinary school. This is UNC, led by Roy Williams. Failing to reach the Final Four is not an option.

Here's a look at what North Carolina must do to reach the Final Four in 2013.

Convince James Michael McAdoo, Kendall Marshall to Stay

Kendall Marshall and James Michael McAdoo are both good enough NBA prospects to declare for the draft. Marshall proved to be an invaluable player for the Tar Heels, while McAdoo played better than Harrison Barnes during the NCAA tournament.

The general rule of thumb is an inevitable lottery pick will declare for the draft, which would mean both Marshall and McAdoo could head to the NBA. But there are also exceptions to that rule...like Harrison Barnes.

Nonetheless, keeping Marshall and McAdoo for another year would be huge for the Tar Heels. They are likely to see Barnes and John Henson go pro this year.

Bring In the Next Recruiting Class

When you have Roy Williams, you are a lucky school. It means that you can back one stunning recruiting class with another.

North Carolina appears to have already done so, ranked fifth in the nation by ESPNU in recruiting thus far.

The Tar Heels' top recruit? Try a point guard by the name of Marcus Paige, the No. 23 overall recruit in the 2013 class and the No. 1 point guard. He's a high-scoring, quick player with excellent decision-making and passing skills.

That's not to mention power forward Brice Johnson, small forward J.P. Tokoto and center Joel James, all 4-star recruits.

When you're North Carolina, losing four potential lottery picks is no big deal.

Develop Underclassmen

It would, of course, be nice for McAdoo to stay at UNC, but don't forget the Tar Heels' other big-time 2011 recruits, including guard P.J. Hairston, forward/center Desmond Hubert and power forward Jackson Simmons.

Hairston, the top recruit of the non-McAdoos, saw the floor the most with North Carolina, struggling in limited minutes. But that's not to say he can't make an impact next season. He was a top recruit for a reason, and he did have some nice games for the Tar Heels this season.

Hubert is still an unknown. He found himself behind Tyler Zeller and John Henson this season and averaged just 4.9 minutes. The potential is there, though.

Same goes for Simmons, who averaged just 1.8 minutes in 23 games this season.

Powerhouses like North Carolina have shown throughout the years that they can surprise with some top recruits down the line.
