WWE WrestleMania 28: 10 Reasons Why John Laurinaitis Will Be the Controlling GM

Robert AitkenJun 7, 2018

At WrestleMania 28 on Sunday, John Laurinaitis has the chance to become the lone controlling general manager in WWE. After Sunday, the interim RAW GM could potentially have general manager responsibilities for both RAW and Smackdown.

Then again, if the team representing Teddy Long wins, it could be all over for John Laurinaitis. Everything about this guy on screen in WWE will be up for grabs at WrestleMania.

There will be nothing to worry about because Team Johnny will be successful at WrestleMania in what I am realizing is not an elimination tag team match.

Pretty much, this could all be over with a frenzy in quicker time than it takes to read this entire article. All that you need to know is that at the end of either, it will have Team Johnny as the winners of the match.

Without even getting into the competitors and analyzing how they match up well with one another, here are 10 reasons that Laurinaitis has to control both brands going forward.

Unresolved Feud with CM Punk

1 of 10

You know, that guy that is WWE Champion right now? That guy who will be coming home for the Extreme Rules pay-per-view four weeks after WrestleMania?

That same CM Punk who nearly got screwed by Laurinaitis last summer at the Money in the Bank pay-per-view, which was also in Chicago?

It seemed like this feud between the two just got dropped randomly, but there's something still here. If Punk is still the Best in the World and Laurinaitis is still the man in charge, this feud can and will happen going forward.

Great Relationship with Heels

2 of 10

It takes a special man to control and have the respect of the heels. Laurinaitis is that kind of guy. The formula is pretty simple. If the heels are happy, everyone is happy. With angry heels, matchups are interrupted and faces are not saved from random attacks.

Look at how the inmates ran the asylum under Triple H. Without him, heels have been happier and the rest of the roster is happier because of it.

Christian's 'One More Match'

3 of 10

I know he isn't on the team anymore, but doesn't this still apply? It's like giving a championship ring to the guy who got injured before the title game.

Christian won't act on having that match anytime soon and Laurinaitis will likely give it to him anyway in what will garner a lot of heat from the fans.

Then again, there are many who were happy to see Christian return to the ring, only to be beaten down by CM Punk earlier this week.

Teddy Long's Time Has Passed

4 of 10

Since July 2004, Theodore Long has been in charge in some capacity on the Smackdown brand with few interruptions. To justify how long that has been, Zach Gowan was on the roster in 2004.

Long went from being a referee to a manager and then became a general manager. He hasn't looked back since.

I can't imagine Long stepping back into a lower role, so Sunday may just be the end of Teddy Long as we know him. He is 64 years old and has been in the professional wrestling business since 1985.

Needless to say, this could be the swan song for Long, and this match could be his way out of the company, at least in front of the camera.

The Rising Stock of David Otunga

5 of 10

Don't mistake this guy's talent. The man known in pop culture as Jennifer Hudson's man, David Otunga, has been more than his A-List status. He has truly shown his worth in the company. His alignment with Laurinaitis is smart, and his gimmick as a wrestling lawyer is unique and based on the truth.

Otunga had a good look and decent charisma on the first NXT season. To say that his in-ring skill was not polished was being nice to him. He has come a long way and deserves his WrestleMania debut on Sunday.

As captain of Team Johnny, which features former world champions on it, Otunga is the only man in this match without a singles title. Does that make it seem even crazier to think that he might be getting the winning pinfall for his team?

His Real-Life Position Within WWE

6 of 10

Laurinaitis is still the Executive Vice President of Talent Relations for WWE. Whether his GM status remains or is taken from him at WrestleMania does not change that fact. How could they really act like Laurinaitis is off television with him still being an important part of the day-to-day operations of WWE?

It just doesn't seem logical, and it will be a lot harder to pass off the retirement of Long than any demotion done by Laurinaitis. WWE is publicly traded and the line between reality and storyline is blurred more often now than ever.

Pending Feud with Triple H

7 of 10

Remember these two feuding with one another? HHH is still the CEO and Laurinaitis is still the Executive VP of Talent Relations.

Triple H is finishing out his career with The Undertaker, while Laurinaitis is just days away from complete GM control of both RAW and Smackdown. Triple H nearly assumed a governing role, but his WrestleMania match has pulled him away from it.

What is to say that, after some time off to heal wounds, Triple H returns triumphantly to try and take the reins away from Johnny Ace? Anyone else smelling a SummerSlam showdown?

Bland Personality Is Actually Refreshing

8 of 10

In a pro wrestling world where each persona needs a unique voice and has to bring something different to the table, John Laurinaitis is about as different as they come.

Talking alongside larger-than-life stars, Laurinaitis is about as bland and homely as they come, especially when he speaks.

When Punk mocks the voice of Laurinaitis, it only further gets over his bland tone, which somehow works for him. Would you really expect Laurinaitis to be anything short than the most boring man you have ever met?

The fact that he calls himself Mr. Excitement only plays into that conflict.

Incredible Heat in Today's Wrestling Business

9 of 10

He's not just a heel. He is one of the biggest heels in the company. Laurinaitis wasn't even a public figure on television months ago, yet he is booed feverishly. Not only is he booed consistently, but it is done by almost everyone at a given event.

That deafening reaction is not anything that needs to be changed. In fact, it can be fed by giving him more power and getting that reaction on both RAW and Smackdown.

It also helps any face opposing him, because they will suddenly become the greatest person in the world for that moment.

The Next Mr. McMahon

10 of 10

Don't tell me you don't see it. Triple H can't be that assertive and vindictive authority figure that McMahon was. Insert Laurinaitis. He'll develop his own walk, his own theme, his favorite phrases and many, many more enemies.
