Kansas City Chiefs: 5 Things That KC Still Needs to Do This Offseason
With the 2012 NFL offseason now in full swing, the Kansas City Chiefs have already made a handful of moves in free agency.
They have acquired three possible starters and two other players that will improve the overall depth of the team for next season and beyond.
However, the Chiefs aren't done yet.
Here are five more things that they still need to do this offseason.
Add a Veteran DT
1 of 5The Chiefs have struggled at the defensive tackle position for far too long.
With hardly any NFL experience returning at that spot on the field, it's time that KC adds a veteran to the mix for next season.
With Kelly Gregg likely to retire this offseason, KC should invest in other free agents. Antonio Garay or Shaun Rogers, for instance, could become another stopgap while the Chiefs focus on developing another player to fill that role for the future.
Garay is the more talented of the two, but Rogers has experience playing in Chiefs head coach Romeo Crennel's defense.
Select an ILB in April's Draft
2 of 5With this year's free-agent market for impact 3-4 ILBs being very weak, the Chiefs have no choice but to turn to next month's draft for help at this spot.
Boston College's Luke Kuechly would be a solid pick in the first round, considering that he could come right in and likely start from day one at inside linebacker next to Pro Bowler Derrick Johnson.
Also, former NC State star Audie Cole could be there in the later rounds if KC likes him as more of a developmental player.
Select a Guard in April's Draft
3 of 5Last year, the left guard position was one of the weakest spots on KC's entire roster.
With a handful of intriguing OG prospects in this year's draft class, the Chiefs should be able to land a solid player to fill that hole next month.
Stanford's David DeCastro could be Kansas City's first pick in the draft at No. 11 overall, and if they take him, he would immediately improve not only the LG spot, but also the entire offensive line.
The Chiefs could also elect to go with Wisconsin's Kevin Zeitler in the next round or wait until later if they don't want to take DeCastro that high in the draft.
Select a Pass-Rusher in April's Draft
4 of 5Last season, the Chiefs only possessed two legitimate pass-rush threats on their defense.
They were OLBs Tamba Hali and Justin Houston, who were the only two players on the team that registered more than five sacks for the campaign.
With the cupboard being pretty bare right now for pass-rushers in this year's free agency, KC should select one in the draft.
Troy's Jonathan Massaquoi could be a steal in the middle rounds, as he racked up an impressive 19.5 sacks in his two years for the Titans.
Add More Depth to the Roster
5 of 5Adding more depth to a roster is something that all GMs around the NFL stress every year.
With the recent acquisitions that the Chiefs have already made over the last month, they have already gone a long way to accomplishing that goal this offseason.
However, they need to keep going.
There are still a few decent free agents left, and they will have many opportunities to add depth at certain positions in the draft next month.
