MLB Trade Rumors: Should New York Mets Consider Trading Mike Pelfrey?

Zak SchmollJun 7, 2018

Although there has been some speculation as to whether or not the New York Mets are truly interested in trading right-handed starting pitcher Mike Pelfrey, according to Adam Rubin from ESPN, his availability is simply "routine." He doesn't totally believe the Mets are incredibly invested in trying to move him.

However, wouldn't trading Pelfrey make quite a bit of sense?

First of all, the New York Mets need to worry about the future. When they traded away Carlos Beltran, they were definitely committing to building for the future.

Pelfrey is 28 years old.

I'm not saying he is old, but if they are committing to building for the future, by the time the future rolls around, he will be old. If the New York Mets are ready to seriously compete in five years, he will probably be past his prime if he ages like most players age.

Would it not make sense then to try to grab some more young talent in exchange for Pelfrey? He would definitely have some value in the trade market as he went 15-9 with a 3.66 ERA in 2010. Although 2011 was not as successful, he was obviously a good pitcher at one point and he should be entering his prime seasons.

Overall, if the New York Mets are able to get some raw talent in exchange for Pelfrey, it would probably be worth their while to try. Any prospects they are able to acquire would help them compete in the future. 2012 will probably not be a spectacular season for the Mets whether they have Mike Pelfrey or not, so they might as well make their best effort to compete a few years down the road.
