WrestleMania 28: 10 Things You Need to Know About the Undertaker vs. Triple H
On Sunday, wrestling fans from all walks of life can sit around a television that has WrestleMania on it and can witness what WWE has deemed to be the "end of an era."
In actuality, it will be the third WrestleMania clash between The Undertaker and Triple H and the second time in two years that these two square off at the event. It will, however, be their first Hell in a Cell match at WrestleMania.
Triple H is determined to do what it takes to get rid of The Undertaker and feels that destroying his undefeated streak at WrestleMania is the way to do just that. The Undertaker wishes to be made immortal and becoming the only man to win 20 WrestleMania matches is surely the way to do that.
There is more to this match than what is on the surface.
Sure, it is about two legends and two fixtures of the wrestling business for the last 15 years, but there is more that needs to be known. There are interesting facts to this match. There are milestones and firsts that are being achieved in this match.
Here are 10 important things to keep in mind when watching this match on Sunday night.
The 25th Hell in a Cell Match
1 of 10The silver steel structure gets its silver anniversary in matches at WrestleMania.
The structure debuted in 1997 at Bad Blood in a match that featured Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker.
The match is most widely remembered for the debut of Kane, who broke into the cage, attacked The Undertaker and helped Shawn Michaels win the match.
Almost 15 years later, it will be Michaels who is the referee in the match, while The Undertaker attempts to be on the winning end at WrestleMania.
Don't expect a Kane interference this time around.
The Third WrestleMania Match Between These Two
2 of 10For the first time in his illustrious streak, The Undertaker faces an opponent for the third time at WrestleMania.
The Deadman had previously faced Kane at WrestleMania XIV and WrestleMania XX.
He also faced Shawn Michaels at consecutive WrestleManias XXV and XXVI.
This will be the third time that The Game has been the opponent. The two men fought at WrestleMania X-Seven and WrestleMania XXVII previously.
Also, with this being a Hell in a Cell match and the first one being a No Holds Barred match, this is the first time that The Undertaker has been involved in two gimmick matches with the same man, as well as the first instance of a gimmick WrestleMania match in consecutive years.
The Second Hell in a Cell Match in WrestleMania History
3 of 10The Undertaker has been inside Hell in a Cell at a WrestleMania already.
At WrestleMania XV, two years before facing Triple H the first time, The Undertaker and Big Boss Man fought one another inside of the structure.
That match took place exactly 13 years ago today on March 28, 1999.
It is not a flashy WrestleMania or Hell in a Cell match, but is not featured on any DVDs for the match, the venue or even in anthologies of The Undertaker. This is likely due to the controversial nature of the conclusion of the match and the post-match acts.
After Big Boss Man was defeated, The Undertaker attached a noose to Big Boss Man's neck as the cell was rising back up into the rafters. At one point, Big Boss Man was hanging high above the ring by only some rope that was lynching him in front of the entire world.
It was graphic and, while Big Boss Man was okay, it was a very uneasy thing to watch. It doesn't become easier when discovered that Big Boss Man died in 2004 from a heart attack.
Triple H Is Only Superstar with Six Hell in a Cell Victories
4 of 10In the 24 previous Hell in a Cell matchups, there aren't a lot of men who have done better than The Game.
Triple H has taken claim with the match as his favorite playground.
One-fourth of all of the instances in the match have ended with a victorious Triple H.
The Cerebral Assassin has won six of these matches in his career and is gunning for a seventh. Not to be outdone too badly, The Undertaker is second on that list with five and can tie Triple H's mark if he wins on Sunday.
No other man has more than three, the amount won by Shawn Michaels, the special guest referee.
In fact, take the combined 11 victories for Triple H and The Undertaker inside Hell in a Cell and the other victories combine to just 13. That does total to 24, but keep in mind that there have been some no contests and some tag-team victories inside the structure over the years, which has evened out the number.
The Undertaker Competing in Record 12th Hell in a Cell Match
5 of 10Triple H may have an edge on victories, but The Undertaker makes that up in experience.
Sunday will be the 12th time The Undertaker sets foot inside Hell in a Cell, clearly the top mark in the match's history.
Second on that list is—you guessed it—Triple H, who will appear for the ninth time at WrestleMania.
No other man has been inside Hell in a Cell more than four times.
Neither Man Has Won This Match Since Hell in a Cell 2009
6 of 10Newark hosted Hell in a Cell 2009, the first-ever pay-per-view based upon Satan's Structure.
In the opening contest, The Undertaker defeated CM Punk to become World Heavyweight Champion.
That was the first-ever world championship to change hands inside Hell in a Cell.
The main event of the night was a tag-team Hell in a Cell match between Legacy (Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase) against D-Generation X (Shawn Michaels and Triple H).
Despite being beaten up terribly in the back and on the ramp, Triple H would make it back to the ring.
He would be locked out by Legacy, but would break the chain and help gain a victory for DX.
Since that night, neither man has won a Hell in a Cell match. Triple H hasn't even been involved in another Hell in a Cell match, while The Undertaker would lose to Kane the following year inside Hell in a Cell.
Either way, it will be the first victory inside the structure for either man in two-and-a-half years.
Special Guest Referee Streak in Five of Last Six WrestleManias
7 of 10The special guest referee streak at WrestleMania continues this year with Shawn Michaels as the special guest referee.
In five of the previous six WrestleManias, there has been some form of a special guest referee in at least one match.
Last year's WrestleMania had "Stone Cold" Steve Austin as the referee for the Michael Cole vs. Jerry "The King" Lawler match.
WrestleMania XXVI had Bruce Hart as the referee in the Vince McMahon vs. Bret Hart match.
WrestleMania XXV had no special referee, but Snoop Dogg acted as "master of ceremonies" in WrestleMania 24's Playboy BunnyMania Lumberjill match.
WrestleMania XXIII has Austin as a referee once again, this time in charge of Bobby Lashley vs. Umaga in the Battle of the Billionaires.
Michaels has been unpredictable as a referee in his career. There's no telling if what Michaels will be doing is helping Triple H out or calling the match right down the middle.
The key to this match is Michaels.
First-Ever Outdoor Hell in a Cell Match
8 of 10Never had a Hell in a Cell match taken place at an outdoor stadium until this Sunday.
WWE likely will have an awning of sorts that will suspend the Hell in a Cell above the ring until it is lowered for the match.
Still, it will make for an interesting dynamic for the match.
What happens if these two men climb to the top of the cage, something that hasn't been done in years? It is so beyond their capabilities?
This is the same matchup that gave us chair shots directly to the head last year.
Despite the rest of the roster not taking those risks anymore, these two don't have anything to lose by showing us a spot we haven't seen in so long, if ever.
Not the First Time Both Men Inside the Cell
9 of 10These two men have actually faced each other inside Hell in a Cell before.
It wasn't just the two of them inside, though.
They were both members of the first-ever six-man Hell in a Cell match at Armageddon in 2000.
That match took place in Birmingham, Alabama, about 800 miles away from Miami.
That match saw three men make their Hell in a Cell debuts on that night. Rikishi, The Rock and Kurt Angle all appeared inside Hell in a Cell for the very first time that night, with Angle, the WWF Champion at the time, retaining his championship inside the structure in just the second world title match inside that match type.
All three of those men never appeared in Hell in a Cell ever again.
The other man in the match was "Stone Cold" Steve Austin. He had appeared once before inside Hell in a Cell during a no contest on an episode of RAW. He wouldn't appear in that type of match again after this night.
If this embodied the era that WWE is talking about, these two men literally are what remains from it. Not only have they stood the test of time, but both have revisited this demonic structure time and time again, while other greats of the generation have refused to go back.
Undertaker's Streak Could Be Five Times as Long as Next Active Undefeated Streak
10 of 1020-0.
It seems almost unfathomable.
The simple fact that this will be the 28th WrestleMania and The Undertaker has appeared in all but eight of them is simply amazing.
The Rock, Randy Orton and John Cena all have a match at WrestleMania, helping them to join an exclusive club. The three will be included to make just 14 men that have ever competed in nine or more WrestleMania matches.
Both Bret Hart and Hulk Hogan have won eight WrestleMania matches. That is as close as anyone else comes to The Undertaker's current 19 WrestleMania wins.
And as far as a streak goes? Forget about it. The largest current undefeated streak in WWE outside of The Undertaker's is the one that belongs to Rob Van Dam, who is a whopping 4-0 at the event in his career.
So, an Undertaker victory not only is a dozen more than the next competitor, but his 20-match streak will be five times as long as the next longest streak in WWE history.
Plus, 20 is just a nice round number. It's a nice number to retire on, if you ask me.
