Arnold Palmer Invitational 2012: Biggest Threats to Tiger in Final Round

Austin GreenJun 5, 2018

Tiger Woods is dominating the Arnold Palmer Invitational, but given his recent struggles on the course, a final-round collapse certainly isn't out of the question.

Woods was near perfect on Friday, hitting 17-of-18 greens in regulation on his way to a 65. In the third round, he has continued his strong play. As I'm writing this, he's two under (par) through 14 holes, which puts him three shots ahead of his closest trailer.

However, it has yet to be seen if he can string together four solid rounds of golf. If he melts down on Sunday, these are the most likely candidates to overtake him atop the leaderboard.

Graeme McDowell

McDowell was on fire Friday, dropping an insane 63 in the second round. He's cooled off since then, but at nine under (par) for the tournament, he's the biggest threat to Tiger heading into Sunday.

He's been playing well this year, as he's already got one top-10 finish on the season. And as he proved at the 2010 US Open, he isn't afraid of the big moment.

Don't be surprised if McDowell strings together a great final round to snatch the victory from Tiger.

Ernie Els

Els won the 2010 Arnold Palmer Invitational, so it certainly wouldn't be a shock if he gets another victory at Bay Hill.

On Saturday, he drained six birdies to finish five under (par) for the round. He's currently sitting four strokes off the lead at eight under (par).

If he stays hot on Sunday, he could definitely overtake Woods.

Ian Poulter

In the third round, Poulter moved up the leaderboard by posting a four under(-par) 68. He bogeyed two holes on the day, but made up for it by sinking an eagle on No. 4.

If he has similar success in the final round, and gets some help from Woods and McDowell, Poulter could claim his second career PGA Tour victory.
