WrestleMania 28: Why Cody Rhodes Should Retain the Intercontinental Title
WrestleMania 28 looks like it will deliver this year as one of the biggest and best in the event's history.
With high profile matches like The Rock vs. John Cena, CM Punk vs. Chris Jericho and the intrigue of Triple H vs. The Undertaker, the WWE will make good on its promise to entertain us as usual. Come April 1, I will be watching with anticipation.
Just about every match on the card is a must see.
One match that has my attention is the one between Cody Rhodes and Big Show for the Intercontinental championship. For the past several weeks, we have seen Rhodes go out of his way to wage psychological welfare on Big Show.
Time after time, Rhodes has embarrassed Big Show, leaving us to believe he has Show right where he wants him. The ultimate humiliation was when Rhodes handcuffed Big Show on Raw and proceeded to beat on him the same way Floyd Mayweather did when he faced Big Show at WrestleMania XXIV.
So far, Rhodes has been winning the battle.
What about the war? Will he walk away from WrestleMania with the Intercontinental Title and add another embarrassing chapter to Show's WrestleMania legacy, or will Show finally redeem himself and defeat Rhodes for the title?
No matter what happens, Rhodes should be allowed to retain the title.
Why? The answer is simple enough—Cody Rhodes has actually made us care about the Intercontinental title again.
Since winning the title from Ezekiel Jackson, both his stock and the title's stock have risen considerably. He has become one of the biggest stars on SmackDown.
I venture to say that he is the best intercontinental champion the company has had in a long time. Let's not forget the return of the classic belt that so many greats of the business have held.
Being champion means something to Rhodes. If he drops the title to Big Show, the belt will lose some of it's luster. Big Show isn't someone you put a title on anymore. His job is simple at this stage of his career—putting over younger talent like Rhodes.
Look at how far Rhodes has come since he started with the company in 2007.
In the beginning of his career, his biggest claim to fame was being the son of Dusty Rhodes and the brother of Goldust. Because of his family ties, Rhodes was expected to become a huge star.
Unfortunately, Rhodes seemed to be lacking his father's charisma or his brother's confidence. However, things picked up as time went on.
Following stints as co-holder of the tag team championship with Ted DiBiase and being a member of Legacy with DiBiase and Randy Orton, Rhodes has finally come into his own a someone the company can count on who can stand on his own.
Rhodes is still in his 20s and will be a part of the business for a long time to come, as long as he remains healthy. He is just one of the young stars the WWE should be cultivating for the future as a world champion.
Being Intercontinental champion adds to his legacy the longer he holds the belt. Ideally, he should hold the belt longer than The Honky Tonk Man did. He's so much better than Honky was.
Besides, Big Show doesn't need the intercontinental Title.
Show has the luxury of being over with the fans; win, lose or draw he'll still have our respect.
Meanwhile, the longer Rhodes holds the belt the bigger both he and the belt will become, benefiting SmackDown.
Right now, Rhodes is as important to the title as the title his to him. Keep the belt on him for the foreseeable future.
