WrestleMania 28: How This Year's Mania Can Be WWE's Best Event Ever

Mike ChiariMar 23, 2012

With four top-level matches and a solid undercard in place, WrestleMania XXVIII looks as if it can be one of the best WrestleManias in quite some time. It remains to be seen whether it has all the tools to be the best ever, but it wouldn't be a stretch to say that it has the potential to be precisely that.

Everyone has a differing opinion with regards to what the best WrestleMania of all time is, but WrestleMania X-Seven, WrestleMania XIX and WrestleMania 21 are all often mentioned among them.

Each of those events had special aspects that made them great, and it won't be easy for WrestleMania XXVIII to match them.

Here are three things that WrestleMania XXVIII needs in order to be considered the best event the WWE has ever put on.

Give Main-Event Matches Ample Time

One thing that almost every WWE pay-per-view tends to suffer from at times is a lack of time devoted to main-event matches. Those matches are meant to be the main selling points of the event, so they should be given plenty of time to play out.

There are four such matches on the WrestleMania XXVIII slate, and they are The Rock vs. John Cena, The Undertaker vs. Triple H, CM Punk vs. Chris Jericho and Daniel Bryan vs. Sheamus.

All of those matches should be on for at least 30 minutes, give or take a few for the Bryan vs. Sheamus match, which is clearly fourth in the quartet of main events.

All of them have the potential to be classic WrestleMania matches, so all of them have to be given a proper amount of time to tell a story. Since WrestleMania is four hours long, that shouldn't be much of a problem, since none of the undercard matches are likely to last more than 15 minutes or so.

A long match doesn't always necessarily equal a great match, but there isn't a wrestling fan out there that wouldn't love to see those four matches go on for a long period of time.

Every Top Face Comes Away With a Win

This may not be a popular notion with the Internet crowd, but if WrestleMania XXVIII is going to be remembered as a great one for years to come, having the four faces of the company come out on top makes a lot of sense.

It's fair to say that right now the WWE's top four guys, in order, are John Cena, CM Punk, Randy Orton and Sheamus. All of them are faces, all of them are fairly young and all of them are extremely marketable. Not only are they big now, but they should be for the foreseeable future.

Many look back at WrestleMania 21 favorably, not only because it had great matches, but because it was when Cena and Batista officially became stars. Cena, Punk, Orton and Sheamus are already stars, but this could be the WrestleMania that establishes the company's core four stars for the next several years to come.

Three of the four matches involve current stars against those of the past as Cena is taking on The Rock, Punk is facing Chris Jericho and Orton is battling Kane. This WrestleMania could signify a passing of the torch in a lot of ways, and that gives it the potential to be an all-time great.

John Cena Heel Turn to Finish

I fully realize the hate and vitriol that will be flung in my direction for even suggesting this as a possibility. However, if John Cena were to turn heel at the conclusion of WrestleMania XXVIII and the rest of the card lives up to its billing, it will unquestionably be the best WrestleMania ever.

I fully understand the argument of Cena being a huge money maker for the company, but if Vince McMahon wants this event to me remembered forever, turning Cena heel is the right move.

Cena turning heel might decrease his popularity among children slightly, but adult males would eat it up. The loss in revenue would be negligible. Not to mention, somebody would need to step up in Cena's place. In all likelihood, that would be CM Punk. He is already a huge star, but there is nothing stopping him from reaching a Cena-esque level of popularity should he be placed in the right position.

There are several reasons why many wrestling aficionados consider WrestleMania X-Seven to be the best ever, but the biggest is likely the surprise ending. "Stone Cold" Steve Austin had spent years feuding with Vince McMahon, but he ultimately sold out and joined forces with Vince to defeat The Rock.

Coincidentally The Rock will be facing Cena in the main event this year. If Cena were to turn heel, it would blow Austin's heel turn out of the water.
