WWE: A Look at the Midcard Madness Semifinalists

Robert AitkenJun 7, 2018

We are down to just four men in the Midcard Madness tournament. After the field of 40 men began this bracket, now just one-tenth of those men remain. Despite upsets in the first few rounds and a few promising seeds falling earlier than expected, the last round had all eight of the top seeds in the tournament.

One of the top four seeds fell in the quarterfinals, but it has left this tournament with four different superstars that could all end up winning the entire tournament. Did your favorite get enough votes to make the next round and have a chance to be crowned the king of the midcard? Let's find out.

Here Are Your Final Four

1 of 8

[1] Jack Swagger: 6.9 percent

[5] Dolph Ziggler: 93.1 percent

An unexpected letdown from the top overall seed sent Jack Swagger packing and had Dolph Ziggler rolling to the last four remaining. The clash of two superstars who are now friendly had the Show-Off really piling on the victory at the end.

[2] Cody Rhodes: 66.7 percent

[6] Wade Barrett: 33.3 percent

The reigning Intercontinental champion had no problem with Wade Barrett. The barrage could not take down the son of Dusty Rhodes and Cody, now the highest remaining seed, is two victories shy of winning this entire tournament.

[3] Christian: 64.1 percent

[7] Kofi Kingston: 35.9 percent

Christian didn't have much of a problem disposing of Kofi Kingston. Kingston went for the upset of Captain Charisma, but those hopes of a semifinals berth went...well...boom.

[4] The Miz: 64.6 percent

[8] R-Truth: 35.4 percent

The Miz has really turned his stock around in recent weeks and it has shown in his results in this tournament. Even with a current champion and two former world champions, can The Miz actually be the favorite to win this tournament?

Cody Rhodes' Path to This Point

2 of 8

- Second Round: Defeated Jinder Mahal with 98.8 percent of the vote

- Third Round: Defeated Justin Gabriel with 93.5 percent of the vote

- Quarterfinals: Defeated Wade Barrett with 66.7 percent of the vote

Put simply, Cody Rhodes has been cruising in this tournament. Jinder Mahal and Justin Gabriel were pretty easy tests early on, but Wade Barrett may have exposed damage in Rhodes' armor.

With lower and lower percentages each round, can Rhodes get back on his feet and avoid falling short of winning this tournament? After all, as a midcard champion for more than 200 days, it is hard to imagine Rhodes not winning this tournament.

Christian's Path to This Point

3 of 8

- Second Round: Defeated Ezekiel Jackson with 97.6 percent of the vote

- Third Round: Defeated Zack Ryder with 72.1 percent of the vote

- Quarterfinals: Defeated Kofi Kingston with 64.1 percent of the vote

Despite not having a match in months, Christian is as popular as ever. It seemed to be in question since he has had two world title reigns in the last year and a heel turn that shattered his credibility. His popularity with fans took a hit when he finally became a world champion.

Would Roddy Piper be as cherished as he is if he did become world champion once? There's no reason to think that way about Christian now. Is there still enough love for Christian to have a reason to keep him relevant in this tournament based on popularity?

The Miz's Path to This Point

4 of 8

- Second Round: Defeated Santino Marella with 58.5 percent of the vote

- Third Round: Defeated Evan Bourne with 91.5 percent of the vote

- Quarterfinals: Defeated R-Truth with 64.6 percent of the vote

The Miz had a big hiccup to start out the tournament, nearly being upset by Santino Marella. The Miz recovered with a great performance against Evan Bourne, but he stumbled slightly again against R-Truth.

He is the most inconsistent of the four remaining men. However, if there is a pattern, The Miz should roll in the next round and be in for a dog fight in the finals, if he makes it there.

Dolph Ziggler's Path to This Point

5 of 8

- Second Round: Defeated Drew McIntyre with 79.5 percent of the vote

- Third Round: Defeated Curt Hawkins with 72 percent of the vote

- Quarterfinals: Defeated Jack Swagger with 93.1 percent of the vote

Ziggler is one of those guys that many fans wish wasn't even in position to be in this tournament in the first place.

From the fifth overall position, he has overcome his seed and made the last four. He was very consistent in the first two rounds, but he enjoyed a huge surge in this past round to slay the top overall seed of the bracket. Cinderella isn't a term fit for Ziggler, because he deserves to be this far along.

Semifinals: Dolph Ziggler vs. Christian

6 of 8

If Dolph Ziggler came to WWE around the late 1990s, he probably would have had a career like Christian's.

Christian has had a lot of championships and accolades over the years, but he obtained that elusive world championship under less-than-amazing circumstances. Christian has held it twice, while Ziggler has held it once. Combined, the three title reigns don't stand for very much and both will continue to look beyond WrestleMania for a sustained and legitimate reign.

Which man deserves it more? You decide.

Semifinals: The Miz vs. Cody Rhodes

7 of 8

It's a match that we have never actually seen, but it's pretty intriguing. The former WWE Champion against the man who just needs a chance at the world title pretty soon.

Cody Rhodes is experiencing better treatment in the company than The Miz, who has been more marketable. It's really a toss-up, as it seems like both of these guys appeal to the same kind of wrestling fan. They both think they are great and you either love them or loathe them.

So who gets the vote between these two?

How to Vote

8 of 8

Man, I wish that Final Four graphic was a bit more updated. It was a pretty basic pay-per-view premise that probably wouldn't fly in today's world of March Madness. It probably would have yielded a lawsuit.

Anyway, there is only one way to vote for your favorites in this tournament. Over 5,500 votes have been cast in this tournament through the only way to cast your vote: Bracketeers.

Here is the link to voting. No votes from comments on this article will count toward totals.
