Notre Dame Football Recruiting 2013: Top WR Recruit Cancels Visit with Irish
Notre Dame has a big recruiting weekend coming up, but it just lost one of the marquee names that was supposed to attend.
Wide receiver Robert Foster, ranked No. 3 overall by Scout and No. 26 overall by Rivals, has cancelled his visit to South Bend, according to Steve Wiltfong of 247Sports. Wiltfong also reports that the Pennsylvanian native picked up an offer from UCLA.
Receiving offers is nothing new for the 6'2", 190-pound, do-everything receiver. He's being pursued by Alabama, USC, Notre Dame, Michigan, Ohio State—basically a who's who of big-name programs.
The decision to not attend Notre Dame's Junior Day is a damaging blow to the Irish. They would've loved the opportunity to get some words in the ear of the rising senior, but instead he'll venture back to Pittsburgh in April before taking a trip south to Tuscaloosa, according to his coach (via Wiltfong).
The Irish continue to look for downfield targets to call their own after they were spurned on National Signing Day by Deontay Greenberry.
Brian Kelly has a plethora of quarterbacks at his disposal, but needs more capable weapons on the outside.
Foster is about as promising as they come. Not only does he possess good size, but he's a lighting bolt on the field and a threat to put points on the scoreboard every time he touches the ball.
More than that, though, is the potential he has. If Foster buys into coaching at the next level, the sky is truly the limit for an athlete with his skill set.
Brian Kelly could only hope that that coaching comes from him and his staff, but time will tell.
The cancelled visit doesn't put the Irish on the outs with Foster, we're still 10-plus months out from signing day, but it does cost them an important opportunity to spend time with the young recruit.
