The 10 Fighters the UFC Should Cut

Scott HarrisJun 2, 2018

Cuts happen. It's a basic bumper-sticker fact of life if you make your living as a professional fighter.

There are lots of reasons behind roster turnover. Maybe you're getting old. Maybe you've been injured too long. Maybe you're a pain in the neck. Maybe you're just not good enough. Or maybe it's some combination of the above.

In any case, here are 10 fighters the UFC should consider introducing to the egress.

10. Cody McKenzie

1 of 10

The McKenzietine was fun while it lasted and all, but it appears to have run its course. Tellingly, the man whose bread and butter was a modified guillotine choke lost each of his last two by rear naked choke.

Whatever that phrase is about the guy and the sword, I think it applies here.

9. Shane Roller

2 of 10

Interestingly, Roller stepped in for an injured McKenzie against Michael Johnson in January. He lost by unanimous decision.

It was his third straight defeat in the UFC, bringing his total record in the Octagon to 1-3.

8. Alex Caceres

3 of 10

I enjoy Bruce Leroy as much as anyone, but he has a 1-3 record in the UFC and a 6-5 record overall. What am I missing?

7. Manny Gamburyan

4 of 10

"The Anvil" has lost three straight and can't seem to stay healthy of late.

6. Tyson Griffin

5 of 10

He's lost four of five, and in the last one missed weight by three pounds. He'd be a great fit for Bellator.

5. Michihiro Omigawa

6 of 10

Yes, the 36-year-old has a long history in the sport. But let's not make him out to be Kazushi Sakuraba.

Omigawa (13-11-1) has dropped three of four and, perhaps more damningly to the UFC, he doesn't exactly go down swinging.

4. Sean Sherk

7 of 10

Sean Sherk has said he's hoping for a return this spring. Apparently that makes one of us, if the UFC's deafening public silence is any indication.

Are they toying with the former PED user and oft-injured lightweight? If so, just rip off the proverbial Band-Aid already.

3. Matt Hughes

8 of 10

It is entirely possible that there are more graceful ways to usher the great welterweight into a well-deserved retirement.

But I know for a certainty there are less graceful ways.

2. Rich Franklin

9 of 10

The former middleweight champion's schedule is starting to take on a heavy aroma of novelty. He'll face Cung Le at UFC 148, and before that tangled with other fellow fading stars like Forrest Griffin, Chuck Liddell and Wanderlei Silva.

This is, of course, when Franklin isn't injured.

How much longer is this going to continue?

1. Steve Cantwell

10 of 10

What does this guy have to do to get his walking papers? Does he have to give Joe Silva a swirly in the UFC bathroom?

He's now lost five straight, most recently a unanimous decision to Riki Fukuda.

Seriously. Who does this guy have pictures of?
