Texas A&M Football: 2013 Targets Still Available
The Texas A&M Football staff has accumulated 13 commitments for the 2013 recruiting class, and it is only March. There are plenty of outstanding prospects still available who can make this recruiting class one of the Aggies best in the past decade.
Kevin Sumlin and his staff are off to a great start in addressing the Aggies' needs up front as they transition into the Southeastern Conference.
The Aggies have verbal commitments from four offensive linemen and two defensive tackles. Ideally they will sign five offensive linemen and at least five DL including three defensive tackles.
The Aggies' class should be a large one with up to 28 signees. A&M has a major need at linebacker that still needs to be addressed, but there are plenty of prospects still out there.
They are probably done at running back with two commits. With one quarterback committed who is a major league baseball prospect, look for them to add another in the class despite having four quarterbacks currently on campus.
This is a look at some of the top A&M recruiting targets still available in the 2013 recruiting class.
QB Kenny Hill
1 of 10The 6'1" 205-lb senior from Southlake Carroll (TX) High School is one of the top quarterback prospects in the state of Texas. Hill is the son of former MLB pitcher Ken Hill. Like current Aggie QB commit Kohl Stewart he is also a threat to forego football for the major league draft.
Hill has a very thick build and will surprise many with his physical running style. He has a good arm and knows how to win.
Hill has been the quarterback for the storied Carroll Dragons since his sophomore year. He led them to the 2011 5A state title. He knows how to win.
As a junior, Hill passed for 3,006 yards and 25 touchdowns while rushing for 1.383 yards and 24 touchdowns.
Ideally the Aggies will land him as insurance in case Stewart is drafted highly. If Hill decides to pass on A&M, he would be perfect for the Nebraska or Wisconsin offenses where his physical running style could be featured.
RB Dontre Wilson
2 of 10Dontre Wilson is a running back/slot receiver at Desoto (TX) High School. He has exceptional speed and has been a standout for the Eagles since he was a sophomore.
At 5'10" and around 170 lbs, Wilson is probably not going to be an every down back in college. Ideally he would be used in an offense that gets him the ball in space to take advantage of his breakaway speed.
As a junior, Wilson averaged six yards per carry and scored 15 touchdowns rushing.
Kevin Sumlin would likely use him in the slot and and catching passes out of the backfield. Expect Wilson to end up at either Oregon or West Virginia where they prize smaller backs with Wilson's skill set.
When the Ags received a verbal commit from Laquivionte Gonzalez, it made Wilson a luxury for A&M. You always want speed and signing Wilson would be nice, but with three wide receivers already committed, it is unlikely that they make too big of a push.
WR Ra'Shaad Samples
3 of 10Ra'Shaad Samples is a wide receiver at Dallas Skyline High School and the son of the head football coach Reginald Samples.
The younger Samples is 5'11" and around 170 lbs. He runs around a 4.6 in the 40 and is considered one of the top wide receiver prospects in the state and nation.
Right now A&M and Texas are vying for his attention. Samples has somewhere around 20 scholarship offers from schools around the country. As a junior he caught 65 passes for 1,369 yards and 19 touchdowns.
Although his stats were impressive, Samples tended to disappear in big games. As a senior he will need to show he can step up and be the No. 1 receiver against top flight talent.
Expect Samples to decide between A&M and Texas before the summer is over.
TE Standish Dobard
4 of 10Standish Dobard is one of the nation's top tight end prospects. The 6'5" 235-lb athlete from Louisiana already has the size and speed to play immediately at any college in the country.
Dobard is a star for New Orleans (LA) Karr High School. He uses his size and strength to push opponents around in the running game.
Karr did not have a very effective quarterback last year, so their passing game was limited. When he was thrown to, Dobard showed soft hands.
He is your prototypical tight end prospect with the speed to outrun linebackers and the size to out-muscle safeties. Kevin Sumlin could take a tight end like this and have him catching 50 passes a season.
Dobard's recruitment is still wide open at this point, and he is not deadset on staying in state despite LSU's popularity with his Karr teammates.
OL Maurice Porter
5 of 10Maurice Porter is a 6'5" 280-lb offensive lineman from Fort Bend (Texas) Marshall High School.
Porter moves surprisingly well for a player his size and shows great strength. He has a tremendous initial punch. Porter plays both OT and OG for Marshall.
He projects as a right tackle or a guard in college. Porter is not considered to be one of the elite OL in the state of Texas in the 2013 class but is receiving a lot of attention now that most of those players are off the table. Expect Porter's list of offers to increase as more and more coaches see his video.
Porter would make a great addition for the A&M OL haul and would likely complete OL recruiting for the Ags in 2013 if he committed.
DL Vincent Taylor
6 of 10Vincent Taylor is a 6'3" 240-lb defensive tackle from San Antonio (TX) Madison High School. He burst onto the recruiting scene as a sophomore when he dominated his first varsity game during a national television broadcast of Madison against the future 5A state champion Cibolo Steele squad.
Taylor has great strength and is quick off the ball. He is not rated as highly as some other linemen in the state because there are questions about his motor. Taylor had 153 tackles and 15 sacks as a junior.
Taylor showed well at the U.S. Army All-American combine and is primed for a great senior season.
He is your ideal 3-4 defensive end or 4-3 defensive tackle. He is versatile enough to play any position on the defensive line. He should see immediate playing time wherever he ends up.
A&M has stayed in contact with Taylor and remain one of his favorites even though they have not offered him yet.
DE Torrodney Prevot
7 of 10Torrodney Prevot might be the most explosive athlete in the state. The 6'4" 210-lb defensive end is busy running the sprints for the Alief Taylor track team.
Prevot has received over 20 scholarship offers after college coaches got a look at his junior video. He had 53 tackles and 12 sacks as a junior.
Prevot uses his freakish 4.6 speed to terrorize opposing quarterbacks. He is currently the top defensive end prospect in the state.
He projects to be a terror off the edge as a pass -usher in the 4-3 defense. Every school in the nation will probably make a run at Prevot. He looks like a future NFL defensive end.
Do not be surprised to see his decision come down to A&M, Texas and LSU. These are the kind of athletes A&M needs to land on the defensive side of the ball if they want to be an elite team in the SEC.
LB Jordan Mastrogiovanni
8 of 10Jordan Mastrogiovanni is a 6'2" 220-lb middle linebacker from Dallas (TX) Jesuit College Prep.
The Aggies have a desperate need for true middle linebackers, and Mastrogiovanni fits the mold. He has good instincts and is very strong at the point of attack. At 220 pounds, he has a good frame to add weight and be a 240-pound run-stuffing SEC linebacker.
Mastrogiovanni is considering A&M, LSU and Notre Dame right now and plans on making a decision sometime this summer.
LB Paul Whitmill
9 of 10The Aggies have plenty of outside linebacker prospects on their roster, but Paul Whitmill is simply too good to pass up. The 6'0" 210-lb athlete from Bastrop (TX) High School is one of the fastest linebackers in the state.
He shows great speed and aggressiveness on the field. He should grow into a 230-pound terror off the edge in college.
He is very similar in build and play in high school to former Lewisville High School and TCU standout Shannon Brazell. Whitmill offers you the kind of hiccup-quick speed that you need in the SEC.
Right now it appears the A&M is in good shape to land Whitmill.
DB Antwuan Davis
10 of 10Antwuan Davis is one of the fastest athletes in Texas. The 6'0" 180-lb defensive back has been clocked at 10.4 in the 100 meters.
It remains to be seen whether Davis will play corner or safety at the next level. Some believe he is too stiff to play corner.
Davis is a high school teammate of Paul Whitmill at Bastrop (TX) High School. Together they make the Bastrop defense one of the fastest in the state.
The Aggies are in good shape with Davis who grew up an Aggie fan but soured on the school a little after not receiving much recruiting attention. Sumlin and Co. have evidently mended some of those bridges, and Davis is seriously considering the Aggies among his various offers.
