NCAA Brackets 2012: Predicting Upsets That Will Shake Up Sweet 16

Richard LangfordMar 20, 2012

Until a champion is crowned, it is the upsets that define the NCAA Tournament, and a lot of defining is going to be done in this Sweet 16.

Here are the teams ready to upset all of our brackets and storm into the Elite Eight.

No. 7 Florida over No. 3 Marquette

The Gators are way better than your typical No. 7 seed. They have romped their way past their first two tournament games by a combined score of 155-95.

Guards Kenny Boynton and Brad Beal are leading the way for the Gators, and they are the two that will lead the way to success over Marquette.

Marquette is not a good defensive team, and they can be extremely vulnerable to guard-play. In their last game before the tournament, they lost to Louisville by allowing 84 points. Louisville's offense revolves around their perimeter players much like Florida's.

While Marquette will be able to score enough to keep this game close, Florida will prove to have too many weapons for them to handle.

Score: Florida 81, Marquette 76

No. 4 Wisconsin over No. 1 Syracuse

The Badgers' stifling defense is going to overwhelm the Orange, and without center Fab Melo to man the paint for Syracuse's 2-3 zone, the Orange will not be able to return the favor.

After a bad first half in their opening game, Syracuse has been fantastic on the offensive end. That attack has been led by Scoop Jardine.

Jordan Taylor will be able to lock him down, or at the very least force him into some inefficient play.

On the other end, Taylor is going to have no fear taking the ball to the rack without Melo stalking beneath the bucket.

There is going to be much fewer possessions in this game than Syracuse is used to. This is going to put a premium on efficiency, and this is not a battle Syracuse is prepared to win.

Score: Wisconsin 56, Syracuse 51

No. 10 Xavier over No. 3 Baylor

Baylor likes to score points, but Xavier is not in the habit of giving them up. They have allowed an average of 60.5 points in their first two tournament games.

They do this by playing fierce defense, deliberate offense and being more physical than the team they are playing.

All of this is going to knock Baylor out of their comfort zone, and that is not a spot Baylor is built to succeed in. They have scored 60 or fewer points four times this season. They have lost three of those games.

Xavier is going to win the battle on the boards in this game, and they will dictate the pace. This will be enough to push them to victory.
