Ohio State Football Recruiting: Biggest Needs for Urban Meyer and the Buckeyes

Wes ODonnellJun 7, 2018

It didn't take Urban Meyer too long to make his presence felt in Columbus, as he flipped recruit after recruit over to Ohio State.

Even as the Luke Fickell-led Buckeyes limped to a 6-7 record in 2011, the news of Meyer's arrival restored national championship aspirations before the man even coached a single game.

Now, after a top-four recruiting class with minimal time on campus, the sky is the limit for what Meyer can do with the 2013 class.

His name alone draws attention, and his offense is one of the most explosive we've seen in some time.

The Buckeyes are banned for postseason play in his first year on campus, but what does he need to make a legit run at the national title in 2013 and in future years?

Quarterback

By Braxton Miller's junior season, Meyer is going to want to know he has another guy he can turn to in the future—someone he trusts to run his offense.

The Buckeyes won't go after bulk at the position, but they will look for elite talent that could thrive at what Meyer looks to do in the gun.

Depending on the success Meyer has with the incumbent Miller in their first year together, this could become more of a dire need than some think.

Tight End

Like quarterback, the Buckeyes won't be after quantity, but they will be after quality.

Meyer's offense loves to utilize the tight end, and that is something Ohio State did not do under Jim Tressel. The Buckeyes will be out to land one of the top recruits at the position in the country, and it would hardly be surprising to see them land him.

The Buckeyes will only get to utilize Jake Stoneburner for one more year, and they landed only one tight end (3-star Blake Thomas) in the 2012 class.

Cornerbacks

The Buckeyes are wasting no time addressing this need. Of their five current commitments for the 2013, two are cornerbacks.

Not just any cornerbacks, either. Meyer is quickly reeling in top talent to fit in the secondary.

4-star Eli Woodard out of New Jersey and 4-star Cam Burrows from Ohio both have great combinations of size and speed and would be immediate contributors.

Meyer will make plays for top recruits at both corner and safety as he looks to add at least two more players to the secondary.

This team added a plethora of talent to the defensive line in 2012, but it will need to add some talent on the offensive line for depth and at wide receiver to give Braxton somewhere to go with the ball in 2013. They'll also have needs at linebacker after graduation.
